Ormeau Road
Ormeau Road is a road in south Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. Ormeau Park is adjacent to it. It forms part of the A24. History The road, as currently laid out, dates from the first decades of the 19th century when a bridge was built connecting Newtownbreda village to Belfast. This route was known more commonly as the ''New Ballynafeigh Road'' before eventually taking on the name of Ormeau House, the Marquess of Donegall's residence, which it passed by (and which in turn took its name from the French word , meaning 'young elm'). Ravenhill Road was the Old Ballynafeigh Road. ''Ballynafeigh'' is the name of the townland through which most of the Ormeau Road runs. It is an anglicisation of the Irish meaning 'townland of the lawn or green'. Ormeau is a hinterland town and suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. In the , the suburb of Ormeau had a population of 14,460 people. Geography Ormeau is located in the northern Gold Coast, approximately north of Surfers Paradise, and south of Brisbane. Cupania is a neighbourhood within the north of the suburb (). It was gazetted on 5 October 1991 and named after the Cupaniopsis anacardioides tree that was planted on the estate. History The name of the town came from Ormeau House the estate of Major Alexander Jenyns Boyd, a sugar planter of the 1860s. His first wife, Isabella (née Dawson) was born at Ormeau Road, Belfast, Ulster, Ireland. The word ''ormeau'' is French, meaning ''young elm''. Podinga Provisional School opened on 5 August 1878. In 1892 it was renamed Ormeau Provisional School. On 1 January 1909, it became Ormeau State School. It is within the present-day boundaries of the suburb of Pimpama. Belfast Ormeau (UK Parliament Constituency)
Ormeau, a division of Belfast, was a UK parliamentary constituency in Ireland. It returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1918 to 1922, using the first past the post electoral system. Boundaries and boundary changes The constituency was created by the Redistribution of Seats (Ireland) Act 1918 from an area which had been in the Belfast South constituency. It comprised the eastern half of South Belfast, and contained the then Ormeau ward of Belfast Corporation. It was in use at the 1918 general election only, and under the Government of Ireland Act 1920 its area was again part of the Belfast South constituency, with effect at the 1922 general election. Politics The constituency was a strongly unionist area. This was evident in the very low performance by Sinn Féin in the 1918 election.
