Orkdal is a List of former municipalities of Norway, former municipality in Trøndelag Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 2020 when it joined Orkland Municipality. It was part of the Orkdalen Districts of Norway, region. The administrative centre of the municipality was the city of Orkanger. Some of the notable villages in the municipality included Kjøra, Geitastrand, Gjølme, Thamshavn, Fannrem, Vormstad, Svorkmo, and Hoston, Trøndelag, Hoston. At the time of its dissolution in 2020, the municipality was the 188th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Orkdal Municipality was the 96th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 12,086. Orkanger
Orkanger is a town and the administrative centre of Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The town sits at the end of the Orkdal Fjord, an arm of the Trondheimsfjord. Orkanger is the commercial centre of Orkland Municipality and it is the site of the Orkanger Church. It was established as a "town" in 2014. Combined with the neighbouring suburban village of Fannrem, the conurbation constitutes one of the largest urban areas in Trøndelag county. The town has a population (2018) of 8,204 and a population density of . Transportation Just north of the center of Orkanger, lies the port of Thamshavn. Until 1974, Orkanger had a station on the Thamshavn Line railway with the Thamshavn Station just north of the town. Svorkmo
Svorkmo is a village in Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is situated in the Orkdalen valley along the river Orkla about west-southwest of the city of Trondheim. Svorkmo is located about south of the village of Vormstad and about south of the urban area of Orkanger-Fannrem- Råbygda. The lake Svorksjøen lies about to the east of the village. For about 100 years beginning in the 17th century, Svorkmo was an industrial centre of major importance. It was in Svorkmo that the Løkken copper mine's smelters were situated. Many people worked in the smelting works and the industry formed the base of one of Norway's largest non-city communities, with hotels, bakeries, saw mills, and the Svorkmo Station (a railway station which still exists, though now only as a museum). Orkanger is a former municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1920 until its dissolution in 1963. The area is now part of Orkland Municipality in the traditional district of Orkdalen. The administrative centre was the village of Orkanger. Formannskapsdistrikt
() was the name of a Norwegian self-governing municipality. The name was used from the establishment these municipalities in 1838 until the name fell out of use in 1863. The municipalities had their legal basis from two laws enacted on 14 January 1837. The laws established two types of ; one for cities () and one for rural districts (). Fannrem Concentration Camp
Fannrem concentration camp () was a concentration camp that was located at Fannrem in the old Orkdal Municipality in Sør-Trøndelag county, Norway (now part of Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county). It was established as an annex to the Grini concentration camp by the Nazi authorities in Norway in October 1944 and lasted until the end of the war. The camp consisted of military barracks that held between 6 and 20 prisoners who were kept very isolated. Up to 200 prisoners were in the camp at one time. The prisoners were engaged in hard labor while at Fannrem. Prisoners were put to work as slave labor on the Thamshavn Line railroad. Løkken Verk (or simply ''Løkken'') is a village in Orkland Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. It is located south of the village of Svorkmo, east of the village of Bjørnli, and north of the municipal center of Meldal (village), Meldal. Thamshavnbanen
The Thamshavn Line () was Norway's first electric railway, running from 1908 to 1974 in what is now Trøndelag county. Today it is operated as a heritage railway and is the world's oldest railway running on its original alternating current electrification scheme, using 6.6  kV 25  Hz AC.
