Ben Davis (cellist)
Ben Davis is a cellist from the United Kingdom known for his improvisation. His group Basquiat Strings was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2007. He is a member of the F-IRE Collective. His group, Basquiat Strings, originated as a standard string quartet (two violins, a viola and a cello). Only later did cellist Davis decide to add double bass and drums "to strengthen the rhythmic accompaniment". Basquiat Strings were nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize. The band performed an Electric Prom in 2008 featuring NY sax player Elery Eskerlin. Ben Davis studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and later at the Banff School of Fine Arts with Dave Holland. He has since pursued a varied musical career encompassing classical, world, early music, jazz and experimental. Seb Rochford
Sebastian Rochford is a British drummer and composer. He has recorded and released music as leader of the British band Polar Bear, as Kutcha Butcha and as part of numerous collaborations. Early life Rochford was born in Aberdeen and has a large family of two brothers and seven sisters. He is of English and Anglo-Indian descent. His father, Gerard Rochford, was a poet. Rochford's first performances were with a punk band called Cabbage in Aberdeen. He then studied at the Newcastle College of Music before moving to London. Later life and career Rochford was band leader and composer of award-winning Polar Bear. The group released its first album ''Dim Lit'' in 2004 and its final album ''Same As You'' in 2015. F-IRE Collective
F-IRE Collective is a creative music community. The Collective also has a record label. In 2004, F-IRE Collective won the BBC Jazz Award for Innovation. Details F-IRE (Fellowship for Integrated Rhythmic Expression) was named later in 1998 and came to encompass a community of artists whose outlook stretched beyond 'music alone'. Dance, poetry, film and other modes of creative expression were as much a part of their artistic conception as the sound they produced. Jonny Phillips (musician)
Jonny Phillips (born 11 January 1971, in Kendal, Westmorland, England) is an English jazz guitarist and composer. He played the violin and studied theory from the age of five, however he swapped to guitar at fifteen to study jazz, Brazilian and African music. After his studies at Newcastle College of Music, Phillips moved to London where he set up his group Oriole, with whom he has released three albums on the F-IRE Collective label. Oriole is perhaps one of the few groups to feature two Mercury nominated artists: Ben Davis on cello and Seb Rochford on drums. Phillips is now based in South London after three and a half years living in Andalusia, Spain. Ingrid Laubrock
Ingrid Laubrock (born 24 September 1970) is a German jazz saxophonist, who primarily plays tenor saxophone but also performs and records on soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones. She studied with Jean Toussaint, Dave Liebman and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Laubrock moved to London, England in 1989, and became a member of the F-IRE Collective. In 2008 she moved to New York City. In 1998, she released her first solo album ''Who Is It?'' and was nominated for the 'Rising Star of the Year' award at the 1999 BT Jazz Awards. She was also nominated for the BBC Award 'Rising Star' in 2005 and in 2009 won the SWR Jazz Award for her recording ''Sleepthief'', featuring pianist Liam Noble and drummer Tom Rainey (her husband). Idris Rahman
Idris Rahman ( bn, ইদ্রিস রহমান; born 16 July 1976) is an English clarinettist, saxophonist and record producer. Early life Rahman was born and brought up in Chichester, West Sussex, England by a Bengali father, Mizan Rahman, and an English-Irish mother. His mother was a doctor who grew up in New Zealand. His maternal grandmother is from Ireland. Career Idris Rahman is a London-based saxophonist, clarinettist, singer, bass-player, composer and producer. He has co-led the band Soothsayers for nearly two decades and has co-written and co-produced their seven critically acclaimed albums, the most recent released on label Wah Wah 45s. Julia Biel
Julia Biel is a British jazz singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. Early life Biel was born in London on 22 February 1976. She was brought up in Sutton, then studied French and German at the University of Oxford. There, she was in a band with Idris Rahman. She was a pianist first, then developed her singing. Later life and career Biel won the Perrier Young Jazz Vocalist of the Year in 2000, which brought her more attention. She then joined the F-IRE Collective. In 2005 she made her recording debut as a leader, with the album ''Not Alone''. She also appeared on the Polar Bear album ''Dimlit''. Steve Buckley (musician)
Steve Buckley is a British jazz musician. He is a multi-instrumentalist and most often plays alto and soprano saxophones, penny whistle and bass clarinet. Career Buckley was a key member of Loose Tubes. He has also been an important side man in many bands including, Human Chain (band), Human Chain, Ashley Slater's Microgroove and Django Bates' Delightful Precipice. A close connection with African-American culture, African and Latin American culture, Latin American musicians led him to play and record with such bands as Bosco D'Olivera's Grupo Folia (UK), The Pan-African Orchestra (Ghana), Kakatsitsi (Ghana) and Massukos (Mozambique). One of his closest musical associations is with trumpet player Chris Batchelor. Paul Clarvis
Paul Clarvis is an English percussionist. Biography Born in Enfield, Clarvis was the late Leonard Bernstein's preferred percussionist in London and featured as a soloist on the last night of the Proms in 1996 in a concerto for saxophone and drum kit by Sir Harrison Birtwhistle. In 1998 he was chairman of the Percussion judges for the BBC Young Musician of the Year and together with Sonia Slany he started ''Villagelife Records''. Clarvis also helped Rick Smith with the drum arrangement for the London Olympics 2012 opening, writing Dame Evelyn Glennie's part and together with Smith, assisted in the training of the ceremony's 1000 drummers.
