Oronzio Gabriele Costa
Oronzo Gabriele Costa (26 August 1787, Alessano – 7 November 1867 Naples) was an Italian zoologist. At first a physician, he taught zoology at the University of Naples. He wrote 126 papers on various subjects, principally entomology, and in 1846 served as president of the Accademia Pontaniana in Naples. His two sons, Achille Costa (1823-1899) and Giuseppe Costa, were also both well known zoologists. Publications There has been a good deal of confusion over the publication details of his most important work, the ''Fauna del Regno di Napoli'' (full title: ''Fauna del Regno di Napoli, ossia, enumerazione di tutti gli animali che abitano le diverse regioni di questo regno e le acque che le bagnano''), published over a long period of time, including posthumously, in collaboration with his son, Achille Costa. Taeger and Blank (1996; p. 253) state that for some of the work, Oronzio was merely the editor, Achille being the actual author, and whose name appears on the title pa ...

Elizabeth Gault Fisher
Elizabeth Gault Fisher (April 29, 1909 – ) was an American entomologist, bacteriologist, and bryologist. She collected thousands of examples of Maryland mosses, including the first examples of a number of species in Maryland. A moss, '' Desmatodon fisherae'', and an insect, '' Mycetophila fisherae'', were named for her. Early life Elizabeth Gault Fisher was born on April 29, 1909, in Baltimore, Maryland. She was the daughter of Anne (née Baylor) and Dr. William A. Fisher, health commissioner of Baltimore. She attended the Calvert School, St. Timothy's School, graduating in 1927, and Roland Park Country School, graduating in 1930. She studied at Cornell University beginning in 1930, and graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1934, a master's degree and a Ph.D. in entomology in 1938. Her dissertation was ''A Comparative Study of the Male Terminalia of the Mycetophilidae of Nearctic America.'' Career In 1939, Fisher went to Philadelphia to research moss. Fisher became ...

Orfelia Fultoni
''Orfelia fultoni'' or “dismalites” is a carnivorous species of fly larvae. It is the only bioluminescent species of dipteran fly found in North America. They produce the bluest light of any studied bioluminescent insect. Discovery ''O. fultoni'' was discovered in the early 1940s near a spring in Glenville, North Carolina by B. B. Fulton. Fulton was performing field work when he noticed ''O. fultoni''’s glowing blue light at night. He found the larvae concealed themselves in crevices during the day and crawled out at night on their webs to emit their light and feed. The O. fultoni had many similar characteristics as spiders including the use of their webs. Fulton was unable to identify the species, so he attempted to raise some of the larvae to maturity but was unsuccessful in his first attempt when his field work was discontinued and the larvae samples were exposed to heat and died. In a second attempt a year later, he found the larvae thrived when kept in a cool, moist en ...

Hermann Loew
Friedrich Hermann Loew (19 July 1807 – 21 April 1879) was a German entomologist who specialised in the study of Diptera, an order of insects including flies, mosquitoes, gnats and midges. He described many world species and was the first specialist to work on the Diptera of the United States. Biography Early years Hermann Loew was born in Weissenfels, Saxony a short distance south of Halle (Germany). The Loew family, though not wealthy, was well-placed. Between 1817 and 1829 Loew attended first the Convent school of Rossleben, then the University of Halle-Wittenberg, graduating in mathematics, philology and natural history. Teacher, tutor and husband Recognizing his abilities as a mathematician, the university, on his graduation, appointed him as a lecturer in the same subjects. In 1830 he went to Berlin and gave lessons in differen ...
