Oreste Ramos
Oreste Ramos Díaz is a Puerto Rican intellectual, lawyer, politician and former senator. He served as a member of the Senate of Puerto Rico from 1977 to 1996, representing the New Progressive Party (PNP). Ramos was first elected to the Senate of Puerto Rico at the 1976 elections. He represented the District of San Juan, and was reelected in 1980, 1984, 1988, and 1992. In 2008, Ramos attempted a comeback, but was defeated at the PNP primaries. The next year, Ramos was one of the candidates considered to fill the vacancy left by former senator Jorge de Castro Font, who resigned to his chair after being convicted by federal authorities. However, Melinda Romero was chosen. Puerto Rico Senatorial District I, also known as the Senatorial District of San Juan, is one of the eight senatorial districts of Puerto Rico. It is currently represented by Nitza Morán (from the New Progressive Party). District profile The Senatorial District I covers all of the capital city of San Juan, as well as Aguas Buenas, and some regions of Guaynabo. It has an approximate population of 462,035. In previous distributions, the territory covered by the Senatorial District I has changed. Originally, the District only covered the capital city of San Juan. Melinda Kathleen Romero Donnelly (born October 8, 1971) is a Puerto Rican politician, and former senator and Representative for the New Progressive Party (PNP). She is the youngest daughter of former Governor of Puerto Rico Carlos Romero Barceló and Kate de Romero. During a break from her political career, Romero worked as a journalist for the ''Caribbean Business'' newspaper. Early years Melinda Romero was born on October 8, 1971, to then-mayor of San Juan and future Governor of Puerto Rico, Carlos Romero Barceló, and Kate Donnelly. Her great-grandfather is Antonio R. Aníbal Marrero Pérez (October 3, 1949 – January 25, 2005) was a Puerto Rican politician. He was a member of the Senate of Puerto Rico from 1984 until he resigned in 2000 amidst corruption charges. Biography Aníbal Marrero was born on October 3, 1949, in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, to Víctor Marrero and Jacinta Pérez. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration with a major in management and education from the University of Puerto Rico. After graduating, Marrero worked as a teacher for the Puerto Rico Department of Education from 1970 to 1972. In that year, he became a school director in Bayamón until 1973. In 1974, he started working as deputy director of the Ecotactics Program for the Municipality of San Juan. Jorge Adolfo de Castro-Font (born September 10, 1963) is a former Puerto Rican senator and former member of the House of Representatives. Originally, he was a member of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) but became an independent representative in 2001 after inner disputes with his party. In 2002, he became a member of the New Progressive Party (PNP) and was elected Senator in 2004 and 2008, despite inner struggles within the party and legal issues.
