Oreocereus Australis
''Oreocereus'' is a genus of cacti (family Cactaceae), known only from high altitudes of the Andes. Its name means "mountain cereus", formed from the Greek prefix ' (, mountain) and the New Latin ', meaning wax or torch. As they are covered with woolly white fuzz (modified spines), a few species in this genus are sometimes known as the old-man cactus, a generic name that also refers to ''Cephalocereus senilis'' or ''Espostoa lanata''. More rarely, the old man of the mountain is also used for some species. ''Oreocereus celsianus'', or the "old man of the mountain" is a member of the family Cactaceae native to the high lands of the Andes in South America, and is named for its fluffy white hair, which may protect it from intense sunlight and extreme temperatures. Distribution ''Oreocereus celsianus'' occurs naturally at high altitudes across Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. Description Growing to around tall, ''O. celsianus'' is covered in a downy white hair, with greatest density at the tips of stems receding to near-bare at the base. The ribbed body has many long, brown spines and blooms in spring with long, tubular red flowers. Joseph Nelson Rose
Joseph Nelson Rose (January 11, 1862 – May 4, 1928) was an American botanist. He was born in Union County, Indiana. His father died serving during the Civil War when Joseph Rose was a young boy. He later graduated from high school in Liberty, Indiana. He received his Ph.D. in Biology from Wabash College in 1889. having received his B.A. in Biology and M.A. Paleobotany earlier at the same institute. He married Lou Beatrice Sims in 1888 and produced with her three sons and three daughters. Rose worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and became an assistant curator at the Smithsonian in 1896. While Rose was employed by the national museum, he was an authority on several plants families, including Apiaceae (Parsley Family) and Cactaceae (Cactus Family). Nathaniel Lord Britton (January 15, 1859 – June 25, 1934) was an American botanist and taxonomist who co-founded the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx, New York (state), New York. Early life Britton was born in New Dorp, Staten Island, New Dorp in Staten Island, New York to Jasper Alexander Hamilton Britton and Harriet Lord Turner. His parents wanted him to study religion, but he was attracted to nature study at an early age. He was a graduate of the School of Engineering and Applied Science (Columbia University), Columbia University School of Mines and afterwards taught geology and botany at Columbia University. He joined the Torrey Botanical Society, Torrey Botanical Club soon after graduation and was a member his entire life.
