Oregon State Beavers Football Team
The Oregon State Beavers football team represents Oregon State University in NCAA Division I FBS college football. The team first fielded an organized football team in 1893 and is a member of the Pac-12 Conference. Jonathan Smith has been the head coach since November 29, 2017. Their home games are played at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Oregon. History Early history Football at Oregon State University started in 1893 shortly after athletics were initially authorized at the college. Athletics were banned prior to May 1892, but when the strict school president, Benjamin Arnold, died, President John Bloss reversed the ban. Bloss' son, William, started the first team, on which he served as both coach and quarterback. 1893–94 Oregon Agricultural Aggies Football Team
The 1893–94 Oregon Agricultural Aggies football team represented Oregon Agricultural College during the 1893 college football season. It was the school's inaugural football season. The team played a total of six games, finishing with a 5–1 record, and were regarded as the best collegiate team in Oregon for the season. Northwest Championship
The Northwest Championship is an unofficial Division I FBS football rivalry series title earned by way of an undefeated sweep of the other three fellow Pac-12 teams located in the Pacific Northwest states of Oregon and Washington. Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, and Washington State first played each other in a round-robin format in the 1903 season. As geographic neighbors and members of the former Pacific Coast Conference and current Pac-12 Conference North Division, each team has generally played the others annually. Among the Ducks, Beavers, Huskies, and Cougars there exist three traditional football rivalries: Oregon–Oregon State, Oregon–Washington, and Washington–Washington State. Tommy Prothro
James Thompson "Tommy" Prothro Jr. (July 20, 1920 – May 14, 1995) was an American football coach. He was the head coach at Oregon State University from 1955 to 1964 and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) from 1965 to 1970, compiling a career college football record of 104–55–5 (). Prothro moved to the professional ranks of the National Football League (NFL) in 1971 as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams, a position he held for two seasons. He then coached the San Diego Chargers from 1974 to 1978, tallying a career NFL mark of 35–51–2 (). Prothro was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1991. 1956 Oregon State Beavers Football Team
The 1956 Oregon State Beavers football team represented Oregon State College in the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) during the 1956 NCAA University Division football season. In the regular season, the Beavers outscored their opponents 184 to 131 on their way to a 7–2–1 record (6–1–1 in PCC, first). They played three home games on campus at Parker Stadium in Corvallis, with one at Multnomah Stadium in Portland. The team captains were center Dick Corrick and quarterback Gerry Laird. Led by second-year head coach Tommy Prothro, Oregon State won the PCC title and were ranked tenth in the final AP poll, released in early December. In the Rose Bowl, they met third-ranked Iowa of the Big Ten Conference. The teams had met in early October in Iowa City, and the home team won by a point. Lon Stiner
Alonzo L. "Lon" Stiner (June 20, 1903 – March 8, 1985) was an American football player and coach. He was the head coach at Oregon State College—now Oregon State University—from 1933 to 1948, compiling a record of 74–49–17. Stiner led the Oregon State Beavers football, Oregon State Beavers to the Pacific Coast Conference in 1941 and the three bowl game victories. 1941 Oregon State Beavers Football Team
The 1941 Oregon State Beavers football team represented Oregon State College in the 1941 college football season. The Beavers ended this season with eight wins and two losses. They were the Pacific Coast Conference champions and won the 1942 Rose Bowl over Duke. Because of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Rose Bowl was held in Durham, North Carolina. Oregon State thus became the only team to win a Rose Bowl outside Pasadena, California. The team captains were Martin Chaves, Stan Czech, Bob Dethman, Quentin Greenough, Lew Hammers, George Peters, and Norm Peters. The Beavers scored 143 points and allowed 49 points. Will Bloss
William Herbert "Will" Bloss, Sr. (April 4, 1869 – June 22, 1921) was the first American football coach at Oregon Agricultural College (later known as Oregon State University) in 1893 and again in 1897. He also was the quarterback of the 1893 team.
