Livingston Island (Russian name ''Smolensk'', ) is an Antarctic island in the Southern Ocean, part of the South Shetlands Archipelago, a group of Antarctic islands north of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was the first land discovered south of 60° south latitude in 1819, a historic event that marked the end of a centuries-long pursuit of the mythical ''Terra Australis Incognita'' and the beginning of the exploration and utilization of real Antarctica. The name Livingston, although of unknown derivation, has been well established in international usage since the early 1820s. Dometa Point ( bg, нос Домета, ‘Nos Dometa’ \'nos do-'me-ta\) is a point in the middle part of South Beaches on Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It is situated 4.3 km west-northwest of Rish Point, 1.2 km southwest of Negro Hill, 4.6 km southeast of Chester Cone, and 4.2 km east-northeast of Nikopol Point. Fontus Lake is centred 600 m northeast of the point. The feature is named after Dometa, governor of the southwestern Bulgarian province of Kutmichevitsa hosting the mission of St. Kliment Ohridski assigned by Czar Boris I of Bulgaria (9th Century AD). The Antarctic Place-names Commission was established by the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute in 1994, and since 2001 has been a body affiliated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria. The Commission approves Bulgarian place names in Antarctica, which are formally given by the President of the Republic according to the Bulgarian Constitution (Art. 98) and the established international practice. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is an interdisciplinary body of the International Science Council (ISC). SCAR coordinates international scientific research efforts in Antarctica, including the Southern Ocean. SCAR's scientific work is administered through several discipline-themed ''science groups''. Antarctic Lakes
There are hundreds of antarctic lakes in Antarctica. In 2018 researchers at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research published a study they claimed cast doubt on the earlier estimate that there were almost 400 subglacial antarctic lakes. Antarctica also has some relatively small regions that are clear of ice and snow, and there are some surface lakes in these regions. They called for on the ground seismic studies, or drilling, to determine a more reliable number. These lakes are buried beneath deep layers of glacial ice. When a glacier is very thick, the pressure at the bottom is great enough that liquid water can exist at temperatures where water would freeze, at regular pressures. The ice above Lake Vostok, the largest antarctic lake, is approximately thick. Tsamblak Hill ( bg, хълм Цамблак, ‘Halm Tsamblak’ \'h&lm 'tsam-blak\) is a rocky hill trending 900 m in north-south direction, 450 m wide and rising to 113 m in eastern Byers Peninsula on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. It surmounts Bedek Stream on the east, Feya Tarn on the south-southwest and Eridanus Stream on the west. The hill is named after the Bulgarian scholar and Metropolitan of Kiev, Grigoriy Tsamblak (1365–1420). Sparadok Point
Sparadok Point ( bg, нос Спарадок, ‘Nos Sparadok’ \'nos spa-ra-'dok\) is a sharp ice-free point projecting 200 m from the coast of Byers Peninsula on Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica with a shingle spit extending further 300 m northwards into Barclay Bay. It is surmounted by Tsamblak Hill. The area was visited by early 19th century sealers. The point is named after the Thracian King Sparadok, 445-435 BC. Lair Point
Lair Point is a point projecting 570 m into Barclay Bay from Robbery Beaches on Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica and forming the east side of the entrance to Kukuzel Cove. Dominated by Lair Hill (96 m). The point is named descriptively from a large cave on the point used by the early 19th century sealers, relics of whose occupation were found by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1957–58. Nedelya Point
Nedelya Point ( bg, нос Неделя, ‘Nos Nedelya’ \'nos ne-'de-lya\) is a sharp ice-free point at the southwest extremity of Ivanov Beach on the north coast of Livingston Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica projecting 300 m into Barclay Bay. It is linked by a chain of rocks to Cutler Stack located 310 m to the north-northwest. The feature was visited by a field party from the British base camp Station P during the summer season 1957/58.
