Ordination Of Women In The Anglican Diocese Of Sydney
The ordination of women in the Anglican Diocese of Sydney is restricted to the diaconate (IE as deacons). The diocese rejects the ordination of women as priests (or presbyters) and bishops. Diocesan position One of the differences between Sydney and the majority of other Anglican dioceses in Australia has been its unwillingness to allow the ordination of women to the priesthood (itself a term infrequently used in the diocese) or presbyterate. This issue is an indicator of Sydney's difference in ecclesiology and theology to most other dioceses within the Anglican Communion. For many Anglicans outside Evangelical churches and even for many Sydney Anglicans within Evangelical churches, the central act of worship is the celebration of the Eucharist. Harry Goodhew
Richard Henry "Harry" Goodhew AO (born 19 March 1931) is a retired Australian Anglican bishop who served as the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney from 1993 to 2000. Appointed as a compromise between opposing "conservative" and "liberal" factions of the Sydney Diocese, Goodhew attempted to heal rifts within the diocese while maintaining an Evangelical stance in keeping with the general ethos of the diocese. Goodhew was born in Sydney and educated at the University of Wollongong. He was ordained in 1958 and began his ministry with curacies at St Matthew's Bondi and St Bede's Beverly Hills. Later he held incumbencies at St Paul's Carlingford and St Stephen's, Coorparoo. In 1976 he was appointed a canon of St Michael's Cathedral, Wollongong and in 1979 Archdeacon of Wollongong. An archdeacon is a senior clergy position in the Church of the East, Chaldean Catholic Church, Syriac Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, St Thomas Christians, Eastern Orthodox churches and some other Christian denominations, above that of most clergy and below a bishop. In the High Middle Ages it was the most senior diocesan position below a bishop in the Catholic Church. Stephen Hale (bishop)
Stephen J. Hale is an Australian bishop in the Anglican Church of Australia. He served as an assistant bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne, as the Bishop for the Eastern Region, from 2001 to 2009, during which time Hale had oversight of over 70 churches in the east of Melbourne. Hale grew up in the Anglican Church in Sydney. He studied at Sydney University then taught at Leeton, New South Wales in the Anglican Diocese of Riverina, for four years. When he returned to Sydney, Hale studied at Moore Theological College and his first position was at St Paul's Anglican Church, Castle Hill. While there, St Paul's became the biggest Anglican church in Australia.
