The Order of the Indian Wars of the United States (OIWUS) is a military society founded in 1896 by officers of the United States Army who served in campaigns against Native Americans from the American Revolution to the late 19th century. History The OIWUS was founded by Colonel B.J.D. Irwin at Fort Sheridan near Chicago. It was patterned after other American military societies such as the Society of the Cincinnati, the Aztec Club of 1847 and the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. Its primary purpose is to provide fellowship to is members and preserve the history of the Indian Wars. The correct name of the OIWUS is the "Order of Indian Wars," not "Order of THE Indian Wars." The latter name belongs to a Colorado-based group of Indian wars enthusiasts. Earlier references here to the "Order of the Indian Wars" are incorrect. James Parker (February 20, 1854 – June 2, 1934) was a major general in the United States Army and a Medal of Honor recipient for his role in the Philippine–American War during 1899. His son, Cortlandt Parker, also became a major general in the United States Army. Early life and education Parker was born in Newark, New Jersey on February 20, 1854, a son of Cortlandt Parker (1818-1907) and Elizabeth (Stites) Parker. He was a member of a family long active in New Jersey government and politics. His father was a prominent attorney who served as public prosecutor of Essex County. Herbert Jermain Slocum (April 25, 1855 - March 29, 1928) was in charge of the 13th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Columbus, New Mexico in 1916 where Pancho Villa burned several buildings in Columbus, New Mexico, stole weapons and horses and killed 18 Americans. Biography Colonel Herbert J. Slocum was born on April 25, 1855, in Cincinnati, Ohio to Colonel Joseph Jermain Slocum (1833-?) and Sallie Hommedieu. He was an eighth generation descendant of Plymouth Colony militia commander Captain Myles Standish. Slocum was appointed to the United States Military Academy on July 1, 1872, but left the academy shortly after failing to graduate in 1876. Marion Perry Maus (August 25, 1850 – February 2, 1930) was a United States Army brigadier general who was a recipient of the Medal of Honor for valor in action on January 11, 1886, in the Sierra Madre Mountains, Mexico. An 1874 graduate of West Point, he served in three wars and in multiple commands in the Army during his long career, retiring in 1913.
