Orco Valley
The Orco Valley ( it, Valle dell'Orco) is a valley in the Piedmont region of northern Italy located in the Graian Alps, in the territory of the Metropolitan City of Turin. The valley takes its name from the Orco river, which flows through the valley. The valley connects Pont Canavese to the Nivolet Pass. It is the site of a series of hydroelectric power plants, including that of the Lake of Ceresole. The main municipalities in the Orco Valley are Locana, Noasca and Ceresole Reale. Locana
Locana is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Italian region Piedmont, located about northwest of Turin in the Orco Valley. In the early 1900s the town had about 7,000 residents. As of 2019 the population declined to 1,500. Locana borders the following municipalities: Cogne, Ronco Canavese, Noasca, Ribordone, Sparone, Chialamberto, Cantoira, Corio, Monastero di Lanzo and Coassolo Torinese. The Istituto Geografico Centrale (IGC, in English ‘’Central Geographic Institute’’) is a privately owned Italian company based in Turin (Piedmont), known for its guide books and hiking maps mainly concerning the Western Alps and their contiguous areas. History IGC was established by Giuseppe Candeletti in 1952. Its first products were some very detailed maps of Turin and the ''Guida Toponomastica di Torino'' (''Toponomastic guide of Turin''). The following year IGC published an Atlante di Milano'' (''Atlas of Milan'') at scale of 1:5,000 . Parco Nazionale Del Gran Paradiso
Gran Paradiso National Park (Italian: ''Parco nazionale del Gran Paradiso''; ), is an Italian national park in the Graian Alps, between the Aosta Valley and Piedmont regions. The park is named after Gran Paradiso mountain, which is located in the park; it is contiguous with the French Vanoise National Park. The land the park encompasses was initially protected in order to protect the Alpine ibex from poachers, as it was a personal hunting ground for King Victor Emmanuel II, but now also protects other species. History In the early 19th century, due to hunting, the Alpine ibex survived in the Gran Paradiso and Vanoise area. Approximately 60 individual ibex survived, here. Punta Bes
The Punta Bes is a 3,177 metres high mountain belonging to the Italian side of Graian Alps. Geography The mountain is located on the border between Piedmont and Aosta Valley, on the watershed dividing Valle dell'Orco from Valsavarenche, the latter tributary of the Dora Baltea. A 3.112 m high saddle divides Punta bes from Punta Leynir, while the Orco/Valsavarenche ridge continues towards the Colle del Nivolet. The Punta Bes, due to its location, offers a good view on the nearby massif of Gran Paradiso. The Punta Leynir (Pointe du Leynir in French) is a 3,238 metres high mountain belonging to the Italian side of Graian Alps. Toponymy The name ''Leynir'' should come from ''Lago Nero'' (''Black Lake''), referring to the color of a small lake located SE of the mountain. The name ''Punta del Leynir'' was adopted by the old maps of IGM.
