Orchard
An orchard is an intentional plantation of trees or shrubs that is maintained for food production. Orchards comprise fruit- or nut-producing trees which are generally grown for commercial production. Orchards are also sometimes a feature of large gardens, where they serve an aesthetic as well as a productive purpose. A fruit garden is generally synonymous with an orchard, although it is set on a smaller non-commercial scale and may emphasize berry shrubs in preference to fruit trees. Most temperate-zone orchards are laid out in a regular grid, with a grazed or mown grass or bare soil base that makes maintenance and fruit gathering easy. Most modern commercial orchards are planted for a single variety of fruit. While the importance of introducing biodiversity is recognized in forest plantations, it would seem to be beneficial to introduce some genetic diversity in orchard plantations as well by interspersing other trees through the orchard. Orange Grove, also known as the Gaillard-Colclough House, is an historic plantation and its plantation house at Gaillard's Crossroads, (intersection of Peach Orchard Road and Black River Road), north of Dalzell, South Carolina. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 19, 1993. Originally built in 1851 in a South Carolina Lowcountry vernacular style of architecture, the house was seriously damaged by a tornado on April 30, 1924, and was rebuilt so that it now appears as a "raised cottage with a Prairie or Craftsman roof." Orange Grove Plantation (Saint Helena Island, South Carolina)
Orange Grove Plantation is a historic plantation house and national historic district located on Saint Helena Island near Frogmore, Beaufort County, South Carolina. The district encompasses one contributing building and two contributing sites, and reflects the early-20th century influx of Northerners onto St. Helena Island. The plantation was first recorded in 1753 when Peter Perry purchased 473 acres. Perry owned 46 chattel slaves. The plantation house, built about 1800, was in poor condition when Henry L. Bowles (1866-1932), a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts, bought the property in 1928. He demolished it and built the present house in the same year. The property also includes the tabby ruin of the kitchen, built about 1800, and a tabby-walled cemetery containing three early-19th century graves of the Fripp and Perry families. The Orange Grove Plantation House is a historic house on a former plantation in Terrebonne Parish, about eight miles away from Houma, Louisiana. It was built in 1850 for John C. The Orange Grove Plantation House was a historic plantation house in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. History The Orange Grove Plantation house was the only Gothic revival mansion built in antebellum Louisiana. Benjamin Morgan, originally from Philadelphia and of a prominent American Revolutionary War family, purchased the land in 1804. After his death in 1826, his son Thomas Ashton Morgan inherited the estate and began growing sugarcane there. Between 1847 and 1853, Thomas A. Morgan commissioned the noted Philadelphia architect William L. Johnston to design the plantation house. Many of the elements of the house, including the bricks, were produced in Philadelphia and transported to the building site, where they were assembled by slaves.
