Opočno (; german: Opotschno) is a town in Rychnov nad Kněžnou District in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 3,100 inhabitants. Opočno is known for the Opočno Castle, one of the most magnificent examples of Renaissance architecture in Bohemia. The town centre with the castle is well preserved and is protected by law as an urban monument zone. Administrative parts Villages of Čánka and Dobříkovec are administrative parts of Opočno. Geography Opočno is located about northeast of Hradec Králové. It lies in the Orlice Table. The highest point is the hill Velká Hvězda at above sea level. Opočno Castle
Opočno Castle ( cs, zámek Opočno) is a complex of buildings comprising a former aristocratic residence located in the East Bohemian town of Opočno, Czech Republic. Its outer arcades are a valuable example of the Renaissance architecture in Bohemia. History The place was first mentioned in 1068 by Cosmas of Prague as a fortified settlement. Later a Gothic castle was built in its location. In 1425 the castle was conquered by East Bohemian Hussites and later it was reconstructed. The round Well Tower is the only still existing part of the original medieval castle. In 1495 the domain of Opočno was bought by the family Trčka of Lípa. Vilém Trčka of Lípa, who undertook a journey to Italy in 1551, rebuilt the palace in the Renaissance style between 1560–67. In this time the new Renaissance arcades were built after Italian examples. Church Of The Nativity, Opočno
The Church of the Nativity ( cs, Kostel Narození Páně) is a Roman Catholic church in Opočno in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. It is located on František Kupka, Kupkovo Square. Built in the 17th century, it was used until 1950 as a conventual church of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, Capuchin Convent of Opočno. Today, it is one of the two active Catholic churches in Opočno, together with the parish Holy Trinity Church, Opočno, Church of the Holy Trinity near Opočno Castle. History The Capuchins decided to establish a new convent in Opočno in 1673. The Capuchin provincial superior Martinus Freibergensis therefore asked the owner of Opočno dominion for his support. Count Louis Colloredo of Waldsee and his wife Maria Eleonora of Sinzendorfu regarded this idea with favour and already on 30 June 1674 the foundation stone of the new building was laid. Holy Trinity Church, Opočno
Church of the Holy Trinity ( cs, kostel Nejsvětější Trojice) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Opočno in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. History The Church of the Holy Trinity in Opočno was built in its present form with three naves and groin vaults supported by 10 pillars in 1567. In that time the owner of Opočno Vilém Trčka of Lípa decided to rebuild his residence in Opočno Castle as well as the adjoining Chapel of St. Andrew. The Gothic chapel was extended and converted into a Renaissance church. Although the new church was built in the heyday of the Renaissance style in Bohemia, the ceiling of the church still resembles the older Gothic architecture. On the other hand, the stone galleries with embossed decorations inside the church provide evidence for a strong influence of Italian Renaissance architecture. Colloredo-Mansfeld
The House of Colloredo-Mansfeld () is an originally Italian noble family of which a branch came to Austria in the late 16th century. There they were raised to barons in 1588, imperial counts in 1727 and imperial princes (in primogeniture) in 1763. They obtained Opočno Castle in the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1634 and acquired numerous further estates in Bohemia and Austria. In 1945 they were expropriated and expelled from the Czechoslovak Republic, but returned after 1990 and had parts of their former estates restituted. History The Colloredo family is originally from Colloredo di Monte Albano, Italy, where they owned numerous estates. According to family tradition, it descends from the Swabian Lords of Waldsee. Czech Renaissance Architecture
Czech Renaissance architecture refers to the architectural period of the early modern era in Bohemia, Moravia and Czech Silesia, which then comprised the Crown of Bohemia and today constitute the Czech Republic. The Renaissance style flourished in the Czech lands from the late 15th century to the first half of the 17th century. In the Crown of Bohemia as well as in other parts of Central Europe the Renaissance style was accepted slower than in southern Europe and its development was delayed in comparison with Italy. It was partly caused by the situation in the Kingdom after the Hussite Wars. The Bohemian Reformation was mistrustful of the influences coming from the "papal" Italy and rather respected the traditional values expressed with the older Gothic style. Therefore, the first examples of the Renaissance architecture in the Czech lands can be found in the domains of the Catholic aristocracy or the Catholic king. František Zdeněk Skuherský
František Zdeněk Xavier Alois Skuherský (July 31, 1830 – August 19, 1892) was a Czech composer, pedagogue, and theoretician. Born in Opočno to František Alois Skuherský, the doctor of Duke Colloredo-Mansfeld and founder of the Opočno hospital. He graduated from the Hradec Králové gymnasium and studied philosophy and shortly medicine at Charles University. Also in Prague, he graduated from an organ school. In music, especially composing, he paid attention since childhood. He signed his first works in the pseudonym ''Opocensky.'' After his studies, he made a living by teaching people music in their homes. In the years 1854 to 1866 he was a theatre kapellmeister in Innsbruck and conductor of the town's singing choir, and later director of the University's cathedral. František Kupka
František Kupka (23 September 1871 – 24 June 1957), also known as ''Frank Kupka'' or ''François Kupka,'' was a Czech painter and graphic artist. He was a pioneer and co-founder of the early phases of the abstract art movement and Orphic Cubism ( Orphism). Kupka's abstract works arose from a base of realism, but later evolved into pure abstract art. Biography Education František Kupka was born in Opočno (eastern Bohemia) in Austria-Hungary in 1871. Jaroslav Plašil (; born 5 January 1982) is a Czech former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent most of his career in France with Monaco and Bordeaux, making 411 Ligue 1 appearances. He played 367 total times for the latter, and captained them to victory in the 2012–13 Coupe de France. Luboš Sluka
Luboš Sluka (born on September 13, 1928, in Opočno) is a Czech contemporary composer. Life and career Lubos Sluka was admitted to Prague Conservatory where he completed his studies in three subjects - percussion, conducting and composition. In 1951, Sluka was chosen as Arthur Honegger's student, as well as George Auric's assistant. However, his stay in Paris has been cancelled due to political reasons. He graduated at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague in composition with Jaroslav Řídký and Pavel Borkovec, film music with Václav Trojan in 1959. Ivo Ulich (born 9 September 1974) is a Czech former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Club career Ulich played for Slavia Prague, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Vissel Kobe and Dynamo Dresden. He retired from football in 2008, but stayed with Dynamo Dresden as a scout. Hradec Králové Region ( cs, Královéhradecký kraj, ; pl, Kraj hradecki) is an administrative unit ( cs, kraj) of the Czech Republic located in the north-eastern part of the historical region of Bohemia.
