These fishes are found in the Western Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Oceans. Taxonomy ''Ophioscion'' was first proposed as a monospecific genus in 1863 by the American biologist Theodore Gill when he Species description, described ''Ophioscion typicus'' from the Pacific coast of Panama. Although ''FishBase'' recognises ''Ophioscion'' as a valid genus, ''Catalog of Fishes'' treats it as a Synonym (taxonomy), synonym of ''Stellifer''. Species ''Ophioscion'' has the following valid species: * ''Ophioscion adustus'' (Louis Agassiz, Agassiz, 1831) (Croaker) * ''Ophioscion costaricensis'' David K. Caldwell, Caldwell, 1958 * ''Ophioscion imiceps'' (David Starr Jordan, Jordan & Charles Henry Gilbert, Gilbert, 1882) (Blinkard croaker) * ''Ophioscion panamensis'' Leonard Peter Schultz, Schultz, 1945 * ''Ophioscion punctatissimus'' Seth Eugene Meek, Meek & Samue ...

Stellifer
''Stellifer'' is a genus of fish in the family Sciaenidae, the drums and croakers. It is found in New World waters.Chao, N. L. (2001)Two new species of ''Stellifer'' from inshore waters of the eastern Pacific, with a redescription of ''S. ephelis'' (Perciformes: Sciaenidae).''Rev. Biol. Trop.'' 49 Supl. 1 67-80. Many species are known commonly as stardrums. In the Americas, this is one of the most diverse genera among the sciaenids. Its members can be found in the tropics and subtropics and in shallow and deeper waters. Some are semianadromous, spawning in the ocean near estuaries so the eggs and young will be taken into lower-salinity environments on the tides.Pombo, M., et al. Sciaenidae
Sciaenidae are a family of fish in the order Acanthuriformes. They are commonly called drums or croakers in reference to the repetitive throbbing or drumming sounds they make. The family consists of about 286 to 298 species in about 66 to 70 genera. Characteristics A sciaenid has a long dorsal fin reaching nearly to the tail, and a notch between the rays and spines of the dorsal, although the two parts are actually separate. Drums are somberly coloured, usually in shades of brown, with a lateral line on each side that extends to the tip of the caudal fin. The anal fin usually has two spines, while the dorsal fins are deeply notched or separate. Most species have a rounded or pointed caudal fin. The mouth is set low and is usually inferior. Their croaking mechanism involves the beating of abdominal muscles against the swim bladder. Sciaenids are found worldwide, in both fresh and salt water, and are typically benthic carnivores, feeding on invertebrates and smaller fish. The ...
