''Opernball'' is a 1995 novel by Austrian writer Josef Haslinger in which thousands of people are killed in a Neo-Nazi terrorist attack taking place during the Vienna Opera Ball. Novel
A novel is a relatively long work of narrative fiction, typically written in prose and published as a book. The present English word for a long work of prose fiction derives from the for "new", "news", or "short story of something new", itself from the la, novella, a singular noun use of the neuter plural of ''novellus'', diminutive of ''novus'', meaning "new". Josef Haslinger
Josef Haslinger (born July 5, 1955) is an Austrian writer. Haslinger was born in Zwettl, Lower Austria. He studied philosophy, drama and Germanic studies at the University of Vienna. He received his PhD in 1980. Since then he has been working as a freelance writer. 1976 to 1992 he was co-editor of the literary magazine "Wespennest". In 1983/84 Haslinger had a teaching position at the University of Kassel, was Secretary General of the Graz Authors' Assembly from 1986 to 1989, and from 1986 to 1994 co-organizer of the "Vienna Lectures on Literature". In 1995 he was a lecturer at the University of Kassel and wrote parts of his political thriller novel, ''Opernball'' (Opera Ball) there. Haslinger has taught since 1996 as a professor of literary aesthetics at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig. He lives Vienna und Leipzig. Neo-Nazism comprises the post–World War II militant, social, and political movements that seek to revive and reinstate Nazism, Nazi ideology. Vienna Opera Ball
The Vienna Opera Ball (German: ''Wiener Opernball'') is an annual Austrian society event which takes place in the building of the Vienna State Opera in Vienna, Austria on the Thursday preceding Ash Wednesday (a religious holiday). Together with the New Year Concert, the ball is one of the highlights of the Viennese carnival season. History The tradition of the ball goes back to 1814 during the time when the crowned heads of Europe and the aristocracy searched for entertainment after the Napoleonic wars. The first ball in the opera house took place in 1877 as a ''soirée''. The following balls were ''redoute'', a French term for masquerade balls or costume parties, where the ladies wore their masks until midnight. Urs Egger (born 9 March 1953 in Bern – died 18 January 2020 in Berlin) was a Switzerland, Swiss film and television director. From 1974 to 1997, he worked for the Swiss ''Neue Zürcher Zeitung'' and the Australian ''Cinema Papers'' as a correspondent from Los Angeles, responsible for reporting on the film industry. He visited the American Film Institute to become a director. Egger died in January 2020 in Berlin, Germany, after suffering a long illness.
