Operation Plunder Dome
Operation Plunder Dome was an undercover investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation into political corruption within the government of the City of Providence, Rhode Island. The operation first became public when the FBI executed a search warrant on Providence City Hall on April 28, 1999. The investigations that followed ultimately led to the indictment and subsequent conviction on federal criminal charges against a number of city officials including the 2002 indictment of then-Mayor Buddy Cianci. Frank Corrente, Chief of Administration for Providence, was found guilty of extortion and bribery and sentenced to 56 months in prison. Political corruption is the use of powers by government officials or their network contacts for illegitimate private gain. Forms of corruption vary, but can include bribery, lobbying, extortion, cronyism, nepotism, parochialism, patronage, influence peddling, graft, and embezzlement. Buddy Cianci
Vincent Albert "Buddy" Cianci, Jr. (, ; , ; April 30, 1941 – January 28, 2016) was an American politician, attorney, radio talk show host, political commentator, and convicted felon who served as the mayor of Providence, Rhode Island from 1975 to 1984 and again from 1991 to 2002. Cianci was the longest-serving mayor of Providence and one of the longest-serving mayors in United States history, having held office for over 21 years. Cianci was twice elected Mayor of Providence. Earlier in his career he served as a state prosecutor in the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General. Cianci was forced to resign from office during both mayoral tenures due to felony convictions. WJAR (channel 10) is a television station in Providence, Rhode Island, United States, affiliated with NBC. Owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, the station has studios on Kenney Drive in Cranston, Rhode Island (shared with Telemundo owned-and-operated stations WYCN-LD and WRIW-CD), and its transmitter is located in Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Jim Taricani
Jim Taricani (August 12, 1949 – June 21, 2019) was an American reporter, who served a sentence of six months of home confinement for refusing a court order to divulge a source. Biography Taricani, an investigative reporter for WJAR television, an NBC affiliate in Cranston, Rhode Island, refused to reveal who leaked a surveillance tape to him. He was convicted of criminal contempt of court on November 18, 2004, and sentenced on December 9, 2004, to six months of home confinement. The tape was used during a municipal corruption probe of then-Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci known as Operation Plunder Dome. He lectured at journalism schools throughout the country and worked with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to urge Congressional passage of a federal shield law for reporters. The history of Rhode Island is an overview of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and the state of Rhode Island from pre-colonial times to the present. Pre-colonization Native Americans occupied most of the area comprising Rhode Island, including the Wampanoag, Narragansett, and Niantic tribes.
