Operation Olympic (game)
''Operation Olympic: The Invasion of Japan 1 November 1945'' is a solitaire board wargame published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1974 that simulates the planned American invasion of Kyūshū, one of Japan's Home Islands, in November 1945. Although critics complimented the game, it did not prove popular, perhaps because it was a solitaire wargame. Background During World War II the development of the American atomic bomb ( Project Manhattan) was a closely guarded secret – even Vice-President Harry S Truman did not know about it until he took office after the death of Franklin Roosevelt. Not knowing about the atomic bomb and its capabilities, the American military moved forward with the assumption that an invasion of the Japanese homeland would be necessary to bring World War II to a close. ''The Wargamer'' was a magazine devoted to the hobby of board wargaming. Originally published as a British bimonthly magazine by UK Wargamers in 1977, it was subsequently published by World Wide Wargames, which then moved to the United States. The magazine ceased publication in 1990. History Keith Poulter, a political science teacher in England, became interested in board wargames in 1975, and decided to produce a wargaming magazine as a hobby. In 1977 he founded UK Wargamers (UKW) in order publish ''The Wargamer''. Like the American wargaming magazine ''Strategy & Tactics'' published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI), ''The Wargamer'' included a small pullout wargame in each issue. Although Poulter planned to make ''The Wargamer'' a bi-monthly magazine, he was only able to produce three issues by the end of 1977. ''Fire & Movement: The Forum of Conflict Simulation'' was a magazine devoted to wargames, both traditional board wargames and computer wargames. It was founded by Rodger MacGowan in 1975, and began publication the following year. In February 1982, Fire & Movement was acquired by Steve Jackson Games. In January 1985 the magazine was sold again to Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI). In 1988, World Wide Wargames (also known as 3W) acquired Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI), publisher of ''Fire & Movement'', ''Battleplan'' and ''Space Gamer'', leading to a complete merger of the two companies. 3W then continued on to publish four gaming magazines simultaneously. Greg Costikyan (born July 22, 1959, in New York City), sometimes known under the pseudonym "Designer X", is an American game designer and science fiction writer. Costikyan's career spans nearly all extant genres of gaming, including: hex-based wargames, role-playing games, boardgames, card games, computer games, online games and mobile games. Several of his games have won Origins Awards. He co-founded Manifesto Games, now out of business, with Johnny Wilson in 2005. ''Ares'' was an American science fiction wargame magazine published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI), and then TSR, Inc., between 1980 and 1984. In addition to the articles, each issue contained a wargame, complete with a foldout stiff paper map, a set of cardboard counters, and the rules. Publication history Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) began publishing ''Ares'' in 1980 as a science-fiction companion to ''Strategy & Tactics''.''Ares'' magazine was similar to ''Strategy & Tactics'', with a game every issue, but it focused on science-fiction and fantasy. ''JagdPanther'' is a game magazine that was published from 1973 to 1976. Publication history In 1973, while a student at Texas Tech, Stephen V. Cole started playing ''PanzerBlitz'', a tactical-level World War II wargame published by Avalon Hill. Cole grew so enamored of the game that he conceived of a series of variants and expansions that he called "PanzerBlitz Unlimited". In order to provide a forum for this, he founded the company JagdPanther Publications to produce the fanzine ''JagdPanther'', dedicated to ''PanzerBlitz'' and other World War II wargames. A box set or (its original name) boxed set is a set of items (for example, a compilation of books, musical recordings, films or television programs) traditionally packaged in a box and offered for sale as a single unit.
