Operation Karbala-2
Operation Karbala-2 (Persian: عملیات کربلای 2) was an Iranian operation during Iran–Iraq War which was launched on 1 September 1986 in Haji Omeran area in Iraq with the command/participation of a brigade from Seyyed-al-Shohada corp-4 (of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps). As a result of the operation which was commenced by the code of "Ya Aba Abdellah al-Hussain (a.s.)", a part of "Haj-Omeran" road and some altitudes became occupied by Iranian forces. At the operation Karbala-2 which was almost near the end of the 4th year of the war, there were other (Iranian) corps which participated in the operation in addition to Seyyed-al-Shohada corp-4, including: Badr brigade-9, Qaem-12, Imam Reza-21, Quds-105 and Shuhada-155; which was done totally by the participation of 28 battalions from Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iran–Iraq War
The Iran–Iraq War was an armed conflict between Iran and Iraq that lasted from September 1980 to August 1988. Operation Karbala-1
In response to the loss of the strategic al-Faw Peninsula during the Iran–Iraq War, the Iraqis pushed into Iran to seize the strategic Iranian city of Mehran to trade for the strategically important territory. Saddam was able to seize the city in May 1986, for the third time. He then offered to trade it for al-Faw, but instead of negotiating, the Iranians recaptured the city in June 1986. Operation Karbala-4
Operation Karbala-4 was an Iranian offensive in the Iran–Iraq War on the southern front. The operation was launched after the failure of Operation Karbala-2 and Operation Karbala-3 to move the Iraqi lines in an effort to capture Iraqi territory. Prelude The battle itself was planned and eventually executed by Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. The operation would be launched under cover of darkness in order to gain a foothold along the Shatt-al-Arab waterway. Once across, the Iranian forces would go on the offensive and eventually move onto the port city of Basra. The attack would be launched towards the Umm ar-Rasas Island in the Shatt al Arab. It most likely was meant as a diversionary attack before the upcoming Operation Karbala-5 (although it may have been called that only after it failed). Operation Karbala-5
The siege of Basra, code-named Operation Karbala-5 ( fa, عملیات کربلای ۵ ) or The Great Harvest ( ar, الحصاد الاكبر), was an offensive operation carried out by Iran in an effort to capture the Iraqi port city of Basra in early 1987. This battle, known for its extensive casualties and ferocious conditions, was the biggest battle of the war and proved to be the last major Iranian offensive. The Iranians failed to reach their objective. Operation Karbala-6 was an Iranian operation during the Iran–Iraq War to prevent Iraq from rapidly transferring units to its defense lines at Basra after Iran had launched Operation Karbala-5 to capture the city of Basra.
