Operation Henderson Hill
Operation Henderson Hill was a US Marine Corps operation that took place in Happy Valley southwest of Danang, lasting from 23 October to 6 December 1968. Background On 23 October Marine intelligence detected that the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 90th Regiment had moved into the Arizona Territory and the 5th Marine Regiment was ordered to the area to investigate. Operation After small arms fire prevented their landing at the primary landing zone the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines were successfully landed by nightfall on 23 October without opposition. The 2nd and 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines searched the area without making contact with any PAVN but did discover a 24-page “Winter-Spring 1968-9 Campaign” strategy document. Chieu Hoi
The Chiêu Hồi program ( (also spelled "chu hoi" or "chu-hoi" in English) loosely translated as "Open Arms") was an initiative by the U.S - Republic of Vietnam to encourage defection by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) and Viet Cong (VC) and their supporters to the side of the government during the Vietnam War. According to U.S, 101,511 PAVN/VC defected under the program but one analyst speculates that less than 25% of those were genuine. Campaign Defection was urged by means of a propaganda campaign, usually leaflets delivered by artillery shell or dropped over enemy-controlled areas by aircraft, or messages broadcast over areas of South Vietnam. A number of incentives were offered to those who chose to cooperate, along with psychological warfare to break enemy morale. An Hòa Combat Base (also known as Đức Dục) is a former U.S. Marine Corps and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base west of Hội An in Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam. History The base was located approximately 28 km west of Hội An and 4 km west northwest of the Mỹ Sơn temple complex, near to the Tỉnh Yên River ( Thu Bồn River) and the An Hòa industrial complex. Happy Valley () was the name given by US Marines to a valley southwest of Danang in Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam Vietnam War Base camp Happy Valley was a major Vietcong (VC)/People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) base camp, storage area and supply infiltration route. Men and material would move from PAVN base areas near Ai Yen 20 km east of the Laotian border, down Route 614, to units operating near Song Tuy Loan or other positions overlooking or surrounding the Danang vital area, comprising Danang City, Danang Air Base, Red Beach Base Area, port facilities, and Marble Mountain Air Facility.
