Operation Claw (2019–2020)
Operation Claw () was a cross-border military operation by the Turkish Armed Forces into Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan Region against the Kurdistan Workers' Party. On the morning of 28 May 2019, Turkish troops fired artillery shells and launched air attacks, followed by border crossings by the Turkish Army and Gendarmerie Special Public Security Command. On 30 May 2019, the first Turkish losses were recorded: a specialist sergeant and a second lieutenant were killed in action. On 31 May 2019, F-16 jets of the 181st Squadron "Leopard" hit PKK targets in the autonomous region. In late June, press sources reported that the Turkish military combat-tested the Bora ballistic missile during Operation Claw in the Kurdistan Region. Kurdish–Turkish Conflict (1978–present)
The Kurdish–Turkish conflict is an armed conflict between the Republic of Turkey and various Kurdish insurgent groups who have either demanded separation from Turkey to create an independent Kurdistan, or attempted to secure autonomy and greater political and cultural rights for Kurds inside the Republic of Turkey. The main rebel group is the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) (Kurdish: ''Partiya Karkerên Kurdistanê''). Although the Kurdish-Turkish conflict has spread to many regions, most of the conflict has taken place in Northern Kurdistan, which corresponds with southeastern Turkey. The PKK's presence in Iraqi Kurdistan has resulted in the Turkish Armed Forces carrying out frequent ground incursions and air and artillery strikes in the region, and its influence in Syrian Kurdistan has led to similar activity there. BÖG
The United Freedom Forces ( tr, Birleşik Özgürlük Güçleri, or BÖG) is a joint expatriate militia of several revolutionary socialist organizations from Turkey, most notably the Revolutionary Communard Party (DKP), active in the Rojava conflict of the Syrian Civil War. Inspired by the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War, the militia was founded in December 2014 in Kobanê within the ''de facto'' autonomous region of Rojava in Syria. The predominant Hoxhaist Marxist–Leninist Communist Party and the Maoist TİKKO did not join the United Freedom Forces, but together with other communist groups from Turkey, Spain and Greece, in June 2015, they altogether formed the International Freedom Battalion. Bora (missile)
Bora is a tactical ballistic missile developed by Turkish company ROKETSAN. It has 610 mm diameter, a length of 8.0 m, a total weight of 2500 kg with a minimum range of 80 km and maximum range of 280 km. Its export version is called Khan. It was tested and entered service in May 2017. Deliveries were completed in early 2021. Design The Bora uses GPS+GLONASS aided INS / INS only guidance and its launcher is mounted on a VOLAT 8x8 truck. It carries a 470-kg high-explosive or fragmentation warhead. Accuracy is ≤10 m. The General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine Multirole combat aircraft, multirole fighter aircraft originally developed by General Dynamics for the United States Air Force (USAF). Gendarmerie Special Public Security Command
The Gendarmerie Special Public Security Command ( tr, Jandarma Özel Asayiş Komutanlığı) or shortly as JÖAK, is the tactical unit of the Gendarmerie General Command. It has several missions which include counter-terrorist actions, underwater operations, hostage rescue, riot control, and other high-threat criminal actions. Members of the unit receive extensive training at the Jandarma School at Foça and also from selected Army instructors. Kurdistan Region ( ku, هەرێمی کوردستان, translit=Herêmî Kurdistan; ar, إقليم كردستان), abbr. KRI, is an autonomous region in Iraq comprising the four Kurdish-majority governorates of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, Duhok, and Halabja, and bordering Iran, Syria, and Turkey. Yaşar Güler (born September 18, 1954) is a Turkish general who currently serves as the 30th Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces, serving in the position since he succeeded Hulusi Akar in July 2018. Career He enlisted in the land forces in 1974, which was effectively the start of his military career. He spent two years prior to his enlistment studying at the Turkish Military Academy.
