Opera Comique (Oslo)
The Opera Comique was Norway's first permanent opera company. The company operated at Stortingsgata ('Parliament Street') no. 16 and existed from 1918 to 1921. Its first major production was ''Tannhäuser'' with tenor Erling Krogh in the starring role. Altogether, the company staged 26 operas, including the Norwegian opera ''Bruderovet'' (The Kidnapped Bride) by Gerhard Schjelderup. A coloratura soprano is a type of operatic soprano voice that specializes in music that is distinguished by agile runs, leaps and trills. Astrid Varnay
Ibolyka Astrid Maria Varnay (25 April 1918 – 4 September 2006) was a Swedish-born American dramatic soprano of Hungarian descent. She spent most of her career in the United States and Germany. She was one of the leading Wagnerian heroic sopranos of her generation. Background Both her parents were Hungarian and born in small towns in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but she was born in Stockholm, where her parents were living during part of World War I. During a Da Capo interview in 1988 Varnay claimed that although she was born in Stockholm, her ancestry was Hungarian, French and German. Kirsten Flagstad
Kirsten Malfrid Flagstad (12 July 1895 – 7 December 1962) was a Norwegian opera singer, who was the outstanding Wagnerian soprano of her era. Her triumphant debut in New York on 2 February 1935 is one of the legends of opera. Giulio Gatti-Casazza, the longstanding General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera said, “I have given America two great gifts — Caruso and Flagstad.” Called "the voice of the century", she ranks among the greatest singers of the 20th century. Bernhard Henry "Benno" Singer (28 February 1875 – 17 May 1934) was a Hungarian-born British entertainment administrator. He was born in Budapest, and settled in London from the age of eleven. He was married twice, first to Evelyn Mary Davis, and later to Mella Marie Schmidt. Singer was responsible for the entertainment at the 1914 Jubilee Exhibition in Kristiania, Norway. He was a central person in the entertainment industry in Kristiania from 1914. He established and managed the revue stage Theatre Moderne in Kristiania from 1914 to 1925. The first revue staged on Theatre Moderne was ''Futt'' from 1915, which is remembered for August Schønemann's breakthrough as comedian. Chat Noir
Chat Noir ( French for 'black cat') is a cabaret and revue theatre in Oslo, Norway. It was established in 1912 by Bokken Lasson. The current director is Tom Sterri. Establishment Chat Noir was established as a cabaret in 1912 by singer Bokken Lasson and her later husband, writer Vilhelm Dybwad, modelled after the Paris cabaret Le Chat Noir from the 19th century. During a visit to Paris in the early 1890s Bokken Lasson had found the inspiration of her life. She experienced the literary cabarets of the time, and performers such as Yvette Guilbert. The next years she toured European cities, wearing a self-composed costume, singing gypsy songs and playing lute, performing on the street, at restaurants, cabarets and occasionally in musical comedies. Theatercaféen
Theatercaféen is a restaurant located in the Hotel Continental, Oslo, Hotel Continental in Oslo, Norway. History Theatercaféen opened in 1900 and is situated opposite from the National Theatre (Oslo), National Theatre, which had opened the previous year. The restaurant and the hotel was originally owned by the Foss Brewery (''Foss Bryggeri''). Caroline Boman Hansen (1860–1956) and Christian Boman Hansen (1868–1915) took over the lease in 1909, and within only three years they were able to purchase the establishment. Elisabeth C. Brochmann is the current and fourth generation owner. In 1985, she took over the management from her mother Ellen Brochmann. Theatercaféen was modernized in 1949, and the restaurant lost some of its distinct ambiance.
