OpenSearch (software)
OpenSearch is a family of software consisting of a search engine (also named OpenSearch), and ''OpenSearch Dashboards'', a data visualization dashboard for that search engine. It is an open-source project developed by the OpenSearch Software Foundation (a Linux Foundation project) written primarily in Java. As of August 2024, AWS reported that OpenSearch had "tens of thousands" of customers, while Elastic claimed to have over 20,000 subscribers. In the preceding year, OpenSearch had about 50 monthly contributors while ElasticSearch had between 70 and 90. History The project was created in 2021 by Amazon Web Services as a fork of Elasticsearch and Kibana after Elastic NV changed the license of new versions of this software away from the open-source Apache License in favour of the Server Side Public License (SSPL). The Server Side Public License (SSPL) is a Source-available software, source-available copyleft software license introduced by MongoDB Inc. in 2018. It includes most of the text and provisions of the GNU Affero General Public License version 3 (AGPL v3), but modifies its provisions for software that is conveyed over a network—requiring that anyone who offers the functionality of SSPL-licensed software to third-parties as a service must release the entirety of their source code, including all software, APIs, and other software that would be required for a user to run an instance of the service themselves, under the SSPL. In contrast, the AGPL v3's equivalent provision covers only the licensed work itself. A Contributor License Agreement (CLA) defines the terms under which intellectual property has been contributed to a company/project, typically software under an open source license. Rationale CLAs can be used to enable vendors to easily pursue legal resolution in the case of copyright disputes, or to relicense products to which contributions have been received from third parties. CLAs are important especially for corporate open source projects under a copyleft license, since without a CLA the contribution would restrict the guardian as well.
