OpenSciEd
OpenSciEd is an American nonprofit organization that creates open source science education materials and curricula for all grades, initially focusing on grades 6-8. OpenSciEd's approach is based on a science storyline, where students build upon their understanding of a topic by asking questions and investigating their answers through various activities. It has been adopted by 10 states. All materials are reviewed by and follow Next Generation Science Standards. Participating States OpenSciEd has been adopted by California, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and Washington. However, because of the difficulty in switching from traditional education, not all districts in states which adopted the new standards use OpenSciEd. Next Generation Science Standards
The Next Generation Science Standards is a multi-state effort in the United States to create new education standards that are "rich in content and practice, arranged in a coherent manner across disciplines and grades to provide all students an internationally benchmarked science education." The standards were developed by a consortium of 26 states and by the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Research Council, anAchieve a nonprofit organization that was also involved in developing math and English standards. The public was also invited to review the standards, and organizations such as the California Science Teachers Association encouraged this feedback.
