Oostwoud
Oostwoud is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 8 km north of Hoorn. History The village was first mentioned around 1312 as Oestenwoude, and means "eastern forest". Oost (east) has been added to distinguish from Midwoud and Nibbixwoud. Oostwoud developed in the Late Middle Ages as a peat Peat (), also known as turf (), is an accumulation of partially decayed vegetation or organic matter. Midwoud
Midwoud is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Medemblik, and lies about 7 km north of Hoorn. History The village was first mentioned around 1312 as Midwoude, and means "middle forest". Middle is used, because it is located between Oostwoud and Nibbixwoud. Midwoud developed in the Late Middle Ages as a peat excavation settlement. In 1984, the Dutch Reformed church burnt down, and only the Neoclassical architecture, neoclassic church tower from 1867 remained. A new church was built in 1987 near the old church leaving the tower detached. Midwoud was home to 218 people in 1840. It was an independent municipality. In 1979, the area of that municipality became part of Noorder-Koggenland and Wognum. In 1990, houses were built in the area between Midwoud and Oostwoud, thus forming a single build-up area. North Holland
North Holland ( nl, Noord-Holland, ) is a province of the Netherlands in the northwestern part of the country. It is located on the North Sea, north of South Holland and Utrecht, and west of Friesland and Flevoland. In November 2019, it had a population of 2,877,909 and a total area of , of which is water. From the 9th to the 16th century, the area was an integral part of the County of Holland. During this period West Friesland was incorporated. Medemblik
Medemblik () is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland and the region of West-Frisia. It lies immediately south of the polder and former municipality of Wieringermeer. History Medemblik was a prosperous trading town, when in 1282, Floris V, Count of Holland, successfully invaded West Friesland. He built several fortresses to control the region, one of which was Kasteel Radboud in Medemblik, and awarded Medemblik city rights in 1289. Hoorn () is a city and municipality in the northwest of the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It is the largest town and the traditional capital of the region of West Friesland.
