Oost- en Middelzwake (also called Zwake) is a former municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It covered a number of polders in the area of the former inlet De Zwake between the former islands of Borssele, Baarland and Zuid-Beveland. A polder () is a low-lying tract of land that forms an artificial hydrological entity, enclosed by embankments known as dikes. The three types of polder are: # Land reclaimed from a body of water, such as a lake or the seabed # Flood plains separated from the sea or river by a dike # Marshes separated from the surrounding water by a dike and subsequently drained; these are also known as ''koogs'', especially in Germany The ground level in drained marshes subsides over time. All polders will eventually be below the surrounding water level some or all of the time. Borssele
Borssele is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 12 km east of Vlissingen. Note that the municipality name is spelled with a single ''s'' while the name of the town is spelled with a double ''s''. Borssele is home to the Borssele nuclear power plant. The village's near-symmetrical street plan from 1616 follows a rectangular design with four streets all leading to a central square (called the "Plein"). The streets are named according to their cardinal directions. History The village was first mentioned in 976 as Brumsale, and means "single room house on the bank". The island of Borssele was lost in 1530 and only the hill on which the castle had stood remained. The village of Monster which was located on the island had been destroyed. Baarland
Baarland is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 21 km east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1295 as Bae(r)land, and means "barren land". Baarland is a road village which developed in the Middle Ages on a ridge. In 1014, a North Sea flood resulted in the creation of the Oost-Borsele island. The hamlets on the island formed the ''Heerlijkheid'' Baarland. In 1295, an army of the County of Flanders landed in Baarland to revenge the plundering of Floris V, Count of Holland and Zeeland. After a long combat, the local armies managed to drive back the Flemish, however Baarland had to be rebuilt. The Dutch Reformed church dates from the mid-14th century. It was damaged by fire in 1532. Zuid-Beveland (; "South Beveland") is part of the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands north of the Western Scheldt and south of the Eastern Scheldt. 's-Gravenpolder
s-Gravenpolder is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Borsele, and lies about 21 kilometres east of Middelburg. History The village was first mentioned in 1318 as "dat Nuweland van Vortrap", and means "'' polder'' of the Count". Before 1316, William III, Count of Holland ordered the construction of a dike around Voortrappen. It was first called 's-Gravenpolder in 1386. The polder and village were owned by the Count of Holland until 1430. 's-Gravenpolder developed as a linear road village. The Dutch Reformed church is a Gothic cruciform church with built-in tower. The choir probably dates from the late-14th century. The tower and nave were constructed in the early-15th century. It was severely damaged during World War II.
