"Oochie Coochie" is the lead single released from M.C. Brains' debut album, ''Lovers Lane''. It was produced by Rico Anderson, with Michael Bivins (of New Edition and Bell Biv DeVoe) serving as an executive producer. The song became a crossover hit, peaking at number 21 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 while also topping the Hot Rap Singles at number one. ''Lovers Lane'' is the debut album by M.C. Brains, released on March 17, 1992, through Motown. The album is perhaps best known for its lead single, "Oochie Coochie", which became the only top-40 hit in M.C. Brains short career, peaking at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100. The album fared less well, only reaching number 47 on the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200. Brains' labelmates Boyz II Men were featured on the album's second single "Brainstorming", as well as the song entitled "Boyz II Men (The Sequel)". The latter song's chorus was interpolated in the group's own sophomore album, II (Boyz II Men album), II (1994). Motown Records is an American record label owned by the Universal Music Group. It was founded by Berry Gordy Jr. as Tamla Records on June 7, 1958, and incorporated as Motown Record Corporation on April 14, 1960. New Edition is an American R&B/Pop group from the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 1978 by Bobby Brown. Their name is taken to mean a 'new edition' of the Jackson 5. The group reached its height of popularity in the 1980s and are considered the "blue print" for what would become the "modern boy band". The lineup originally consisted of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, and Ralph Tresvant. Brown left the group in late 1985 to begin a successful solo career, and they continued as a quartet for one album, before adding Johnny Gill to the lineup in 1987. Bell Biv DeVoe, also known as BBD, is an American music group from Boston, Massachusetts, formed from members of New Edition, consisting of Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins and Ronnie DeVoe. The band is best known for their debut album, the multi-platinum selling ''Poison'', a key work in the new jack swing movement of the 1990s that combined elements of traditional soul and R&B with hip hop. Two singles from the album, "Poison" and "Do Me!", both reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. The band released three more albums, though none had the success of their debut. Crossover is a term applied to musical works or performers who appeal to different types of audience. This can be seen, for example, (especially in the United States) when a song appears on two or more of the record charts which track differing musical styles or genres. The ''Billboard'' Hot 100 is the music industry standard record chart in the United States for songs, published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine. Chart rankings are based on sales (physical and digital), radio play, and online streaming in the United States. The weekly tracking period for sales was initially Monday to Sunday when Nielsen started tracking sales in 1991, but was changed to Friday to Thursday in July 2015. This tracking period also applies to compiling online streaming data. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization that represents the music recording industry in the United States. Its members consist of record labels and distributors that the RIAA says "create, manufacture, and/or distribute approximately 85% of all legally sold recorded music in the United States".
