Onychopterella
''Onychopterella'' ( , from Ancient Greek: ὄνῠξ (''ónyx''), "claw", and πτερόν (''pteron''), "wing") is a genus of predatory eurypterid ("sea scorpion"), an extinct group of aquatic arthropods. Fossils of ''Onychopterella'' have been discovered in deposits from the Late Ordovician to the Late Silurian. The genus contains three species: ''O. kokomoensis'', the type species, from the Early Pridoli epoch of Indiana; ''O. pumilus'', from the Early Llandovery epoch of Illinois, both from the United States; and ''O. augusti'', from the Late Hirnantian to Early Rhuddanian stages of South Africa. Its prosoma (head) could be subquadrate (almost square) or subrectangular (almost rectangular), with reniform (kidney-shaped) eyes. Tylopterella
''Tylopterella'' is a genus of eurypterid, a group of extinct aquatic arthropods. Only one fossil of the single and type species, ''T. boylei'', has been discovered in deposits of the Late Silurian period (Ludlow epoch) in Elora, Canada. The name of the genus is composed by the Ancient Greek words τύλη (), meaning "knot", and πτερόν (), meaning "wing". The species name ''boylei'' honors David Boyle, who discovered the specimen of ''Tylopterella''. It is a poorly-known genus whose carapace (dorsal plate of the prosoma, head) was semiovate bordered by a marginal rim, with eyes laterally placed, a preabdomen and postabdomen (the two halves of the abdomen) with six segments each and a short spike-like telson (which was the posteriormost division of the body). ''Alkenopterus'' is a genus of prehistoric eurypterid classified as part of the family Onychopterellidae. The genus contains two species, ''A. brevitelson'' and ''A. burglahrensis'', both from the Devonian of Germany. Description Like the other onychopterellids, ''Alkenopterus'' was a small eurypterid. The largest species was ''A. brevitelson'', being long. The other species, ''A. burglahrensis'', represents in fact the smallest species of eurypterid known as far, only measuring . Eurypterids, often informally called sea scorpions, are a group of extinct arthropods that form the Order (biology), order Eurypterida. The earliest known eurypterids date to the Darriwilian stage of the Ordovician period 467.3 Myr, million years ago. The group is likely to have appeared first either during the Early Ordovician or Late Cambrian period. With approximately 250 species, the Eurypterida is the most diverse Paleozoic Chelicerata, chelicerate order. Hirnantian
The Hirnantian is the final internationally recognized stage of the Ordovician Period of the Paleozoic Era. It was of short duration, lasting about 1.4 million years, from to Ma (million years ago). The early part of the Hirnantian was characterized by cold temperatures, major glaciation, and a severe drop in sea level. Emsian
The Emsian is one of three faunal stages in the Early Devonian Epoch. It lasted from 407.6 ± 2.6 million years ago to 393.3 ± 1.2 million years ago.
