The Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad was a railroad that grew, in stages, from Rome, New York to Watertown and then to Ogdensburg, New York and Massena, New York. The original Rome and Watertown Railroad terminated in Cape Vincent, NY on the St. Lawrence River. A branch of the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad, commonly known as "The Hojack Line", operated along the south shore of Lake Ontario, from Oswego, New York to Niagara Falls, New York. Lake Ontario Shore Railroad
The Lake Ontario Shore Railroad (LOSRR) was a short-lived common carrier railroad in New York that was absorbed by the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad. Construction The LOSRR was chartered to be built from Suspension Bridge, New York to Oswego, New York in 1858. The Lake Ontario Shore Railroad Company was founded in Oswego on March 27, 1868. Under Chief Engineer James Ross, work commenced in August 1871 in Red Creek, New York. Tracks were open to Oswego, New York in 1873. Early Death Despite heavy support from on-line and planned on-line communities, the LOSRR was unable to handle its great financial obligations. Walworth is a town in Wayne County, New York, United States named after Reuben Walworth, a state official. The population was 9,449 at the 2010 census. The Town of Walworth is on the western border of the county and is east of Rochester, New York. It has a hamlet, also called Walworth. Freeman Hopkins
Freeman Hopkins (1779–1856) was a Quaker and the first settler of Ontario, New York. He was a 5th generation American. His 4th great-grandfather was Stephen Hopkins, a passenger on the Mayflower along with his son Giles, who was his 3rd great-grandfather. He was the son of Freeman Hopkins Sr. and Hannah Cole. Freeman and his wife Martha Patterson, daughter of Charles Patterson and Martha Hall, came to Ontario in the Spring of 1806 from Rhode Island. In 1807 the town of Ontario was founded from a part of the neighboring town of Williamson, New York, Williamson, and was originally called "Freetown" after Mr. Hopkins. During the War of 1812 Hopkins left the area and returned to Rhode Island due to the Quakers testimony against participation in wars, and to avoid the hostilities that took place on Lake Ontario.
