Onstaborg (Wetsinge)
Onstaborg (also known as ''Nieuw Onsta'' in Dutch, meaning "New Onsta") was a borg in the village of Wetsinge, Groningen, Netherlands. The borg was built around 1500 by the family Onsta (also known as Onseda, Onsitha or Onsatha). The Onsta family belonged to one of the oldest and most prominent families of the Ommelanden. The Onsta family also owned an Onstaborg in Sauwerd. In 1658 the borg was sold and refurbished. In 1801 the borg was demolished. There is no trace left of the borg or its grounds. Wetsinge
Groot Wetsinge (English: ''Big Wetsinge'') and Klein Wetsinge (English: ''Small Wetsinge'') are two villages in the municipality of Het Hogeland in the Dutch province of Groningen. The villages are less than half a kilometre apart and are often referred to together as Wetsinge. The closest village, at a distance of less than a kilometre to Wetsinge is Sauwerd. The name ''Groot Wetsinge'' is a rather confusing name, because there are fewer houses in Groot Wetsinge than in Klein Wetsinge. In this context, ''Groot'' means high. This is because of the wierde on which the village lies. Klein Wetsinge is not situated on a wierde. The first occupation of the mound of Groot Wetsinge dates from the 3rd century BC. Several discoveries have been made in the wierde, including an earthen lamp from the first century BC. The wierde is part of a cluster of wierdes along the eastern bank of the Hunze. Borg (castle)
A borg (; Gronings: ''börg'') is a former stronghold or villa in the province of Groningen, Netherlands. Borgs used to belong to noblemen or prominent citizens. A comparable building in the neighboring province of Friesland is called a stins. History A borg usually started as a brick building, a 'steenhuis' (literally meaning 'stone house'), built in the 13th or 14th century. A steenhuis was usually 11 meters long and eight meters wide. The walls were thick, often more than one meter in thickness. Most were originally made of wood because stone was expensive, but less flammable. A steenhuis was not used as a house, but offered protection in times of danger. There is one original steenhuis left in Groningen, the Iwema-steenhuis in Niebert. Some steenhuises were enlarged and became more like a castle; this would be considered a borg. A good example of a borg that originated from a steenhuis is the Fraeylemaborg. Sauwerd
Sauwerd is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland, Groningen, Netherlands. Until the local government reorganization of 1990 the village was the head of the former municipality of Adorp. The village of Sauwerd is 7 to 10 kilometers away from the nearest city, Groningen. The village is built on a wierde, from which it gets the second part of its name. It is inhabited by an estimated 1,100 people. The internationally known swimmer Ranomi Kromowidjojo was born in Sauwerd and lived there for most of her youth. Facilities There is one primary school in Sauwerd, called De Meander (the meander). There is one cooperative grocery store. Sauwerd has a sports complex called De Lange Twee (meaning The Long Two). Groningen (; gos, Grunn or ) is the capital city and main municipality of Groningen province in the Netherlands. Ommelanden
The Ommelanden (; ) are the parts of Groningen province that surround Groningen city. Usually mentioned as synonym for the province in the expression ("city and surrounding lands"). The area was Frisian-speaking, but under the influence of the Saxon city of Groningen most of the area turned to speaking Low Saxon. A reminder of the Frisian past is the Ommelanden flag which looks a lot like the Frisian provincial flag but has more and narrower stripes and more red (stylised heart-shaped leaves of yellow water-lily).
