Onset (audio)
Onset refers to the beginning of a musical note or other sound. It is related to (but different from) the concept of a transient: all musical notes have an onset, but do not necessarily include an initial transient. Onset detection In signal processing, onset detection is an active research area. For example, the MIREX annual competition features aAudio Onset Detection contest Approaches to onset detection can operate in the time domain, frequency domain, phase domain, or complex domain, and include looking for: * Increases in spectral energy * Changes in spectral energy distribution (spectral flux) or phase * Changes in detected pitch - e.g. using a polyphonic pitch detection algorithm * Spectral patterns recognisable by machine learning techniques such as neural networks. Simpler techniques such as detecting increases in time-domain amplitude can typically lead to an unsatisfactorily high amount of false positives or false negatives. The aim is often to judge onsets similar ...

Interonset Interval
In music a time point or ''timepoint'' (point in time) is "an instant, analogous to a geometrical point in space". Because it has no duration, it literally cannot be heard, but it may be used to represent "the point of initiation of a single pitch, the repetition of a pitch, or a pitch simultaneity", therefore the beginning of a sound, rather than its duration. It may also designate the release of a note or the point within a note at which something changes (such as dynamic level). Other terms often used in music theory and analysis are '' attack point''Lejaren Hiller and Ramon Fuller, "Structure and Information in Webern's Symphonie, Op. 21", ''Journal of Music Theory'' 11, no. 1 (Spring 1967): 60–115. Citation on p. 94. and ''starting point''. Milton Babbitt calls the distance from one time point, attack, or starting point to the next a ''time-point interval'', independent of the durations of the sounding notes which may be either shorter than the time-point interval (res ...

Syllable Onset
A syllable is a unit of organization for a sequence of speech sounds typically made up of a syllable nucleus (most often a vowel) with optional initial and final margins (typically, consonants). Syllables are often considered the phonological "building blocks" of words. They can influence the rhythm of a language, its prosody, its poetic metre and its stress patterns. Speech can usually be divided up into a whole number of syllables: for example, the word ''ignite'' is made of two syllables: ''ig'' and ''nite''. Syllabic writing began several hundred years before the first letters. The earliest recorded syllables are on tablets written around 2800 BC in the Sumerian city of Ur. This shift from pictograms to syllables has been called "the most important advance in the history of writing". A word that consists of a single syllable (like English ''dog'') is called a monosyllable (and is said to be ''monosyllabic''). Similar terms include disyllable (and ''disyllabic''; also ''bis ...

The Onset
The Onset were formed in 1987 by Mike Badger after he left his former band The La's. Badger teamed up with locals Danny Dean on guitar, Hamish Cameron on piano and Colin Becket on drums. The first demo "Let's Go Home" can be found on the 2006 compilation CD, ''Lo Fi Electric Excursions by Mike Badger & Friends''. History Their sound was heavily influenced by American bluegrass and country music merged with a dose of punky rock 'n' roll. On hearing the demo Geoff Davies of Liverpool's independent record label Probe Plus Records arranged for the band to record their first LP ''The Pool Of Life'' (Probe 19). ''The Pool Of Life'' was recorded at Ameritz Studios in Birkenhead during May 1988. Ten musicians contributed to the LP, but by the time of its release, the Onset's lineup had stabilised to just five. Mike and Danny being joined by Simon Cousins (from Wiltshire Folk Rock band Ophiuchus (band), Ophiuchus) on bass, Tony Russell on drums, and Paul Hemmings (from the La's) ...
