Onchú
An onchú is a mythical Irish animal. It is listed in the 12th Century ' ''Cogad Gáedel re Gallaib'' (The War of the Irish with the Foreigners) amongst the venomous beasts. A noted onchú is mentioned in ''Cathréim Cellaig'' (Cellach's Victory). It once terrorised the land between Loch Con and Loch Cuilin. The hero Muiredach (brother of the murdered Cellach of Killala) chased it into a lake and killed it after it had killed several of his party. A suggested, but uncertain, etymology of its name is that ''on'' is water and cú is dog and thus water-dog. It has been used as a heraldic device including on the battle flag of the Irish in 1595. Cogad Gáedel Re Gallaib
''Cogad Gáedel re Gallaib'' ("The War of the Irish with the Foreigners") is a medieval Irish text that tells of the depredations of the Vikings and Uí Ímair dynasty in Ireland and the Irish king Brian Boru's great war against them, beginning with the Battle of Sulcoit in 967 and culminating in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, in which Brian was slain but his forces were victorious. The chronicle, which compares King Brian to Augustus and Alexander the Great, was written in the early twelfth century, at least a hundred years after the events it describes. Much of the narrative is drawn from the earlier Annals of Ulster. Date Based on internal evidence and on the nature of the text's allusions to Brian's great-grandson Muirchertach Ua Briain (d. 1119), it has been suggested that the work was composed sometime between 1103 and 1111. Cellach Of Killala
Cellach of Killala ( fl. mid-6th century) is supposed to be an early Bishop of Killala, in Ireland. Cellach appears among the saints of the Uí Fiachrach in ''Genealogiae Regum et Sanctorum Hiberniae'', where Walsh suggests he may have been the ''Cellan Ua Fiachrach'' who appears under 1 May. It is not certain if he ever existed, as the only source, ''Betha Chellaig'', is a much later pseudo-historical account found in Leabhar Breac. The account states he was the eldest son of Eogan Bel, King of Connacht, was taught by Ciarán of Clonmacnoise. Ciarán made him a monk, and Cellach stayed with him until Eogan Bel was killed in the battle of Slicech ( Sligo) against the northern Uí Néill, dated at 543, 546 or 547. He succeeded his father but under a curse from Ciarán, who foretold a dire fate. Enfield (heraldry)
The enfield is a fictitious creature sometimes used in heraldry. Description The enfield has the head of a fox, forelegs like an eagle's talons, the chest of a greyhound, the body of a lion, and the hindquarters and tail of a wolf. It is occasionally portrayed with wings. O'Kelly The earliest known example of the enfield is the crest of the Ó Cellaigh clan of Ireland. Ó Cellaigh of Uí Maine are the most documented O'Kelly sept in early Irish history and annals. The enfield appears in ''Leabhar Ua Maine''. The ancient tradition among the O'Kellys is that they have borne this fabulous animal since the days of King Tadhg Mór Ua Cellaigh who fell "fighting like a wolf dog" on the side of the High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. Leo Ruickbie
Leo Ruickbie is a British historian and sociologist of religion, specializing in exceptional experiences, paranormal beliefs, magic, witchcraft and Wicca. He is the author of several books, beginning with ''Witchcraft Out of the Shadows'', a 2004 publication outlining the history of witchcraft from ancient Greece until the modern day. Ruickbie was born in Scotland and took a master's degree in Sociology and Religion at the University of Lancaster. He then studied at King's College London and was an awarded a PhD for his thesis entitled ''The Re-Enchanters: Theorising Re-Enchantment and Testing for its Presence in Modern Witchcraft''.
