On The Edge (2001 Film)
''On the Edge'' is a 2001 Irish film co-written and directed by John Carney and starring Cillian Murphy, Tricia Vessey, Jonathan Jackson and Stephen Rea. The dramedy tells the story of a suicidal young man and his stay in a Dublin psychiatric hospital where he meets new friends who greatly impact his life. Plot Jonathan Breech is 19 when his father drinks himself to death. After a night with a gram of cocaine, another man's girlfriend and already stolen convertible, he goes to his older brother Mikey's house at five in the morning to get his father's ashes. With the urn in the back seat he then goes on a suicidal drive. After waking up in a hospital he is given a choice: prison for the stolen car or a mental institution. He chooses the latter. John Carney (director)
John Carney (born 1972) is an Irish film director, producer, screenwriter and lyricist who specialises in musical drama films. He is best known as the showrunner and executive producer of '' Modern Love'' on Amazon Prime Video, for his 2007 movie ''Once'' and the film ''Sing Street''. He is also a co-creator of the Irish TV drama series ''Bachelors Walk''. Life and career Carney was born in Dublin and was educated at De La Salle College Churchtown and at Synge Street CBS. He was bassist for the Irish rock band The Frames between 1991 and 1993 and also directed some of their music videos. In addition to shooting music videos, Carney also wrote and directed two award-winning short films (''Shining Star'' and ''Hotel'') before making his first feature. The Jam
The Jam were an English mod revival/ punk rock band formed in 1972 at Sheerwater Secondary School in Woking, Surrey. They released 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their break-up in December 1982, including four number one hits. "Please Forgive Me" is a song by British singer-songwriter David Gray from his fourth album, ''White Ladder'' (1998). The song was originally released on 22 November 1999, then re-issued on 16 October 2000. On its first release in November 1999, it reached 72 on the UK Singles Chart, while the 2000 re-issue peaked at No. 18. Background David Gray said in an interview that the inspiration of the song came from "nowhere." Paul Hartnoll of Orbital was commissioned to remix the song. The Frames
The Frames are an Irish rock band based in Dublin. Founded in 1990 by Glen Hansard, the band has been influential in the Dublin rock music scene. The group has released six studio albums. In addition to Hansard, the band's current line-up includes original member Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Dave Hingerty, Joe Doyle, and Rob Bochnik. History The band was established in 1990 and consists of survivors of Dublin's prolific early 1990s rock-and-roll scene. Doves (band)
Doves are an English indie rock band formed in Manchester. The band is composed of twin brothers Jez Williams (guitar, vocals) and Andy Williams (drums, vocals), and Jimi Goodwin (bass, vocals, guitar). Additionally, the band employs Martin Rebelski, as a touring and session musician on keyboards. The band released four studio albums between 2000 and 2009, two of which reached #1 on the UK album charts. A compilation album, '' The Places Between: The Best of Doves'', was released in April 2010. Doves went on hiatus in 2010. During this time Goodwin released his first solo album, ''Odludek'' (2014), while the Williams brothers regrouped as Black Rivers. "Catch the Sun" is the second single from Doves' debut studio album '' Lost Souls''. The single was released on 29 May 2000 in the UK on 2 CDs and 10" vinyl, and charted at number 32 on the UK Singles Chart. The psychedelic, kaleidoscopic music video for "Catch the Sun" was directed by Sophie Muller. Jamie Cullum covered "Catch the Sun" on his album '' Catching Tales''. "Down to Sea" is an early demo of " Sea Song." The B-sides for CD2 are songs from Doves' previous incarnation as Sub Sub. The versions of "Crunch" and "Lost in Watts" differ slightly from those found on Sub Sub's album '' Delta Tapes''. Supergrass
Supergrass are an English rock band formed in 1993 in Oxford. For the majority of the band's tenure, the line-up consisted of brothers Gaz (lead vocals, guitar) and Rob Coombes (keyboards), Mick Quinn (bass, backing vocals) and Danny Goffey (drums, backing vocals). Originally a three-piece, Rob Coombes officially joined the band in 2002. The band signed to Parlophone Records in 1994 and produced ''I Should Coco'' (1995), the best-selling debut album for the label since the Beatles' ''Please Please Me''. Their first album's fourth single, "Alright", was an international hit. Alright/Time
"Alright" is a song by British alternative rock band Supergrass. It was released with "Time" as a double A-side single from their debut album, ''I Should Coco'' (1995), on 3 July 1995. It was concurrently released on the soundtrack of the 1995 movie ''Clueless'', which helped it become a big hit for the band. It peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, number six in Iceland, number eight in Ireland, number 30 in France and number 96 in Australia. It is the band's most successful single on the charts. Music and lyrics "Alright" received a great deal of airplay in the United Kingdom. The "bona fide teen anthem", with its upbeat lyrics and cheerful piano tune, seemed to epitomise British youth culture at the time, when Britpop was at its height. Burl Ives
Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 – April 14, 1995) was an American musician, actor, and author with a career that spanned more than six decades. Ives began his career as an itinerant singer and guitarist, eventually launching his own radio show, ''The Wayfaring Stranger'', which popularized traditional folk songs. In 1942, he appeared in Irving Berlin's ''This Is the Army'' and became a major star of CBS Radio. In the 1960s, he successfully crossed over into country music, recording hits such as "A Little Bitty Tear" and "Funny Way of Laughin'". Ives was also a popular film actor through the late 1940s and '50s. "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is a song by songwriter Johnny Marks based on the 1939 story ''Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'' published by the Montgomery Ward Company. Gene Autry's recording hit No. 1 on the U.S. charts the week of Christmas 1949. History In 1939, Marks' brother-in-law, Robert L. May, created the character Rudolph as an assignment for Montgomery Ward, and Marks decided to adapt the story of Rudolph into a song. Pixies (band)
Pixies is an American alternative rock band formed in 1986, in Boston, Massachusetts. Until 2013, the band consisted of Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, vocals) and David Lovering (drums). They disbanded acrimoniously in 1993 but reunited in 2004.
