''On Stage'' is a Canadian music variety television series which aired on CBC Television from 1954 to 1955. Premise George Murray hosted this variety series for most of its run, with mid-1955 episodes hosted by Denny Vaughan and Joan Fairfax. Series regulars included Jack Kane's orchestra, the Bill Brady Quartet, with singers Terry Dale, Phyllis Marshall and Wally Koster. John Aylesworth and Frank Peppiatt, later of ''Hee Haw'', were the series scriptwriters, developing comedy segments which featured Alfie Scopp, Reuben Ship, Al Bertram, and Jill Foster. Lever Brothers was the series sponsor. Scheduling This half-hour series was broadcast for a full season on Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. (Eastern) from 6 October 1954 to 1 June 1955, then in the same day and time slot from 6 July to 21 September 1955. John Aylesworth
John Bansley Aylesworth (August 18, 1928 – July 28, 2010) was a Canadian television writer, producer, comedian, and actor, best known as co-creator of the American country music television variety show ''Hee Haw'', which appeared on network television for two years and then ran for decades in first-run syndication. Early career at CBC The son of Fredrick and Marie Aylesworth, John Bansley Aylesworth was born on August 18, 1928, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and performed on radio as a child. He left high school before graduating and went into the advertising business, joining MacLaren Advertising as a writer, where he worked together with Frank Peppiatt. Queen's University at Kingston, commonly known as Queen's University or simply Queen's, is a public research university in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Queen's holds more than of land throughout Ontario and owns Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, England. Queen's is organized into eight faculties and schools. The Church of Scotland established Queen's College in October 1841 via a royal charter from Queen Victoria. The first classes, intended to prepare students for the ministry, were held 7 March 1842 with 13 students and two professors. ''The Big Revue'' was a Canadian variety television show. It was the first ever production of CBC Television when both debuted in 1952. The show was directed by Norman Jewison and written by John Aylesworth and Frank Peppiatt. The pilot episode first aired on 9 September 1952. The series was hosted by actress Toby Robins who would later rise to fame as a panelist on ''Front Page Challenge''. Lever Brothers
Lever Brothers was a British manufacturing company founded in 1885 by two brothers: William Hesketh Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme (1851–1925), and James Darcy Lever (1854–1916). They invested in and successfully promoted a new soap-making process invented by chemist William Hough Watson. Lever Brothers entered the United States market in 1895 and acquired Mac Fisheries, owner of T. Wall & Sons, in 1925. Frank Peppiatt
Frank Peppiatt (March 19, 1927 – November 7, 2012) was a Canadian (naturalized American) television producer and screenwriter, considered a pioneer of the variety show genre. His credits included ''The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour''. Most notably, co-created the variety show, ''Hee Haw'', in 1969 with John Aylesworth. Peppiatt was born to Frank and Sarah Peppiatt in Toronto, Ontario, on March 19, 1927. He attended the University of Toronto, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1949. He took a job with his Toronto classmate, Norman Jewison, after college working on college stage productions. Peppiatt then worked as an advertising copywriter at MacLaren Advertising where he met and worked with John Aylesworth. Alfie Scopp
Alfred Scopp (15 September 1919 – 24 July 2021) was a Canadian actor who worked mostly in television series, including as a voice actor. He also worked in theatre, radio, and films. He was part of the voice cast for the 1964 Christmas special ''Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer''. Scopp was the longest-lived and one of the last surviving cast members of the special. Life and career Scopp was born on 15 September 1919 in London, England, to a Russian-Jewish father and an English mother. As a child, he and his family emigrated to Montreal, Canada. During World War II, he was part of the Royal Canadian Air Force in Newfoundland. It was during this time that he began a career in radio, working for the local station CBG (AM).
