Omer Huyse
Omer Huyse (22 August 1898 in Kortrijk – 2 March 1985 in Luingne) was a Belgian professional road bicycle racer. In 1924, he won stage five of the 1924 Tour de France. In that year, the cyclists were divided in three classes: the first class for top cyclists, the second class for lesser cyclists, and the touriste-routier class for semi-amateur cyclists. Huyse was put in the second class cyclists, so his stage victory was extra special. Kortrijk ( , ; vls, Kortryk or ''Kortrik''; french: Courtrai ; la, Cortoriacum), sometimes known in English as Courtrai or Courtray ( ), is a Belgian City status in Belgium, city and Municipalities in Belgium, municipality in the Flemish Region, Flemish Provinces of Belgium, province of West Flanders. Luingne
Luingne (pronounced // or //; nl, Lowingen; pcd, Loinne) is a village of Wallonia and a district of the municipality of Mouscron, located in the province of Hainaut, Belgium. It was a municipality in its own right before the 1977 fusion of municipalities. The inhabitants are called "Cleugnottes". The district is 554-acre large. Dioceses In 1117, a charter was signed by Ernulfus de Luina. Pope Pascal II (1090-1118) mentions Luingne's altar in a papal bull. A bull of Clement III (1187-1191) confirmed that the chapel and its grounds had been given to the chapter of Tournai. In 1146 the diocese of Tournai was separated from the diocese of Noyon and the presbytery of Luingne became part of the deanery of Helchin. In 1569 the bishop divided this deanery into Helchin-Flamand and Helchin-Wallon, of which Luingne is a part. Road bicycle racing is the cycle sport discipline of road cycling, held primarily on paved roads. Road racing is the most popular professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. The two most common competition formats are mass start events, where riders start simultaneously (though sometimes with a handicap) and race to a set finish point; and time trials, where individual riders or teams race a course alone against the clock. 1924 Tour De France
The 1924 Tour de France was the 18th edition of the Tour de France and was won by Ottavio Bottecchia. He was the first Italian cyclist to win the Tour and the first rider to hold the yellow jersey the entire event. The race was held over 5,425 km with an average speed of 23.972 km/h (14.896 mph). 60 riders finished the race from the original 157 cyclists. Entrants of the 1924 Tour included several past and future winners including defending champion Henri Pélissier (1923), Philippe Thys (1913, 1914, 1920), Lucien Buysse (1926) and Nicolas Frantz (1927, 1928). The event saw the increase of the time bonus for stage wins move from 2 minutes to 3 minutes. In addition, it was the final year of the 15-stage format that had started in 1910.
