The Car Is On Fire
The Car Is on Fire was a three-piece pop outfit from Warsaw, Poland. The band was formed in early 2002 and took its name from the first words on Godspeed You! Black Emperor's album '' F♯ A♯ ∞''. In May 2005 the debut, self-titled album was released. Its garage rock sound was balanced by melodies and angular rhythms. One year later, with the help of top polish producer Leszek Biolik and his studio team, the group recorded their second album, entitled Lake & Flames. Here, the music evolved into a much more eclectic hybrid of new wave energy, IDM beats, intimate acoustic balladry, string/horn arrangements and experimental psychedelia. It was met with nearly universal acclaim from the Polish media. The hype resulted in a number of awards, including the prestigious Fryderyk (the Polish equivalent of a Grammy) for the best alternative album of 2006. The album features many string/horn arrangements, synths and vocal harmonies as opposed to the raw garage style of the group's debut album. John McEntire
John McEntire (born April 9, 1970 in Portland, Oregon) is an American recording engineer, producer, drummer and multi-instrumentalist, based in Chicago, Illinois. He is a member of both Tortoise and the Sea and Cake. McEntire started playing drums at age 10. Throughout high school, he performed in marching bands and studied privately for seven years. He went on to attend Oberlin Conservatory initially as a percussion major, but eventually switched to study in the school's then newly created program for Technology in Music and Related Arts. Musical career McEntire is currently a member of Tortoise, The Sea and Cake, and The Red Krayola. Tortoise is an American post-rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1990. The band incorporates krautrock, dub, minimal music, electronica and jazz into their music, a combination sometimes termed "post-rock". Tortoise have been consistently credited for the rise of the post-rock movement in the 1990s. The Sea And Cake
The Sea and Cake is an American indie rock band with a jazz influence, based in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The group formed in the mid-1990s from members of The Coctails (Archer Prewitt), Shrimp Boat (Sam Prekop and Eric Claridge), and Tortoise (John McEntire); the group's name came from a willful reinterpretation (as the result of an accidental miscomprehension) of "The C in Cake", a song by Gastr del Sol. Starting with 1997's '' The Fawn'', the group has relied on electronic sound sources, such as drum machines and synthesizers, to color its music, but has retained its distinctive post-jazz combo style. Gastr Del Sol
Gastr del Sol (derived from a combination of the name of a race horse (Gato del Sol) and David Grubbs' previous band Bastro) was an American, Chicago-based band, consisting for most of their career, of David Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke. Between 1993 and 1998 they released seven albums ranging in genre from post-rock (the scene they were most associated with) to musique concrète. Early line-up Grubbs, a former member of Squirrel Bait formed the band in Chicago in 1991 from the final line-up of the group Bastro, with Bundy K. Brown and John McEntire on bass guitar and drums respectively. The trio released their first album, ''The Serpentine Similar'', in 1993, ushering in a quieter, less rock-oriented sound with the change of name. ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) is an online tutoring and assessment program that includes course material in mathematics, chemistry, introductory statistics, and business. Rather than being based on numerical test scores, ALEKS uses the theory of knowledge spaces to develop a combinatorial understanding of the set of topics a student does or doesn't understand from the answers to its test questions.
