Omar Hodge
Omar Wallace Hodge (2 February 1942 – 20 December 2017) was a politician in the British Virgin Islands. Hodge was the third longest serving member of the House of Assembly (including its former incarnation as the Legislative Council) after Lavity Stoutt and Ralph O'Neal. Hodge served continuously as the representative for the 6th District from his election in the 1979 general election until his surprise defeat in the 2011 general election. He served a total of . He elected not to contest the 2015 general election. Hodge was a longstanding member of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), and six of the nine general elections which he contested had been as a VIP candidate. BVI Beacon
''The BVI Beacon'' is a weekly British Virgin Islands newspaper founded in June 1984 and published on the island of Tortola. The ''Beacon'' is owned and published by local businessman Russell Harrigan, also the publisher of ''Business BVI''. The online version of the newspaper was founded on February 14, 2001. The paper's motto is "The light that comes from wisdom never goes out." The paper is published on Thursdays, and organised into sections: Local News, Business, Weekend and Culture and Sports. The first ''Beacon'' cost 35 cents. In 2018, the price was raised to $1. History The first issue of the ''Beacon'' was published on 7 June 1984. At the time, there was only one other newspaper in the territory, the ''Island Sun'', which held a virtual monopoly on the business since 1962. Alvera Maduro-Caines
Alvera Maduro-Caines is a British Virgin Islands politician. She is a member of the House of Assembly of the British Virgin Islands for the Sixth District, a position that she has held since the 2011 general election. She was originally elected as a representative of the National Democratic Party but in 2020, she crossed the floor to join the Virgin Islands Party. She is the current Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism. Early life She attended BVI High School in Tortola from 1971 to 1976, and the Gary Training Center in Texas from 1977 to 1979. She began her career in 1979 as a registry clerk for the Government of the British Virgin Islands before joining Devcon International as an accounts clerk in 1980. Willard Wheatley
Willard Wheatley MBE (16 July 1915 – 22 January 1997) was a British Virgin Islands educator and politician who served two consecutive terms as the Chief Minister of the British Virgin Islands from 1971 to 1979. He was the second ever Chief Minister of the Territory, and the first ever minister of finance. He served as Chief Minister at the head of two different coalition governments: one as ''de facto'' leader of the United Party, and the other the VI Democratic Party. At an event to commemorate what would have been the 100th birthday of Wheatley, then Premier Orlando Smith made a commitment to provide public funds to memorialise his achievements and for a book about his life to be published. 2007 British Virgin Islands General Election
General elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 20 August 2007. The result was a landslide victory for the opposition Virgin Islands Party (VIP) over the incumbent National Democratic Party (NDP). The VIP took 7 of the 9 district seats (of the remaining district seats, only 1 was taking by the NDP; the other was taken by Alvin Christopher, an independent candidate endorsed by the VIP). The VIP also took 3 out of the 4 territorial at-large seats. 2003 British Virgin Islands General Election
General elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 16 June 2003. It was won by the opposition National Democratic Party (NDP), which took 54.4% of the vote and 8 of the 13 available seats on the Legislative Council. After the election the NDP formed a Government for the first time in its history. Both major parties - the NDP and the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) actually increased their share of the overall vote at the expense of minority parties and independents. No independents or any minority parties won any seats. The NDP won all four of the territorial-at-large seats. Results The NDP's victory was largely as a result of sweeping all four of the At-large seats. General elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 17 May 1999. The result was a victory for the incumbent Virgin Islands Party (VIP) led by Chief Minister Ralph T. O'Neal over the newly formed National Democratic Party (NDP) led by Orlando Smith. 1986 British Virgin Islands General Election
Snap general elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 17 November 1986. The result was a victory for the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) led by Chief Minister Lavity Stoutt over the United Party (UP). Subsequent to the election, Ralph T. O'Neal became leader of the opposition despite not being head of the UP. The VIP won five of the nine available seats giving it an absolute majority. Conrad Maduro and Ralph O'Neal were the only members of the UP to win a seat. Maduro only won by a single vote, and O'Neal would change allegiance to the Virgin Islands Party before the next general election. General elections were held in the British Virgin Islands on 11 November 1983.
