Military Patrol
Military patrol was a team winter sport in which athletes competed in cross-country skiing, ski mountaineering and rifle shooting. It was usually contested between countries or military units. The military patrol competition encompassed 25 kilometer cross-country skiing (15 km for women) and rifle shooting. The size of the patrol was four members. The total climb had to be from 500 to 1200 meters (300 to 700 for women). The rules were very similar to modern biathlon. Traditionally the participating patrol had to consist of one officer, one non-commissioned officer (NCO) and two privates. The officer carried a pistol instead of a rifle and did not take part in the shooting. The total weight of the backpacks of the NCO and the privates had to be at least 24 kilograms. In later years the competitors did not carry backpacks, and the rifles were small bore rifles, similar to those in biathlon. The patrol leader did not have any kind of weapon. Nikolay Kruglov
Nikolay Konstantinovich Kruglov (russian: Никола́й Константи́нович Кругло́в; born 31 January 1950) is a former Soviet Union biathlete. At the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck he won gold medals in the 20 km individual and with the men's relay team. He became world champion in the sprint event at the 1975 World Championships in Antholz. Johann Passler
Johann Passler (born 18 August 1961) is a former Italian biathlete. At the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Passler won bronze medals in the 20 km and in the relay. Valeriy Medvedtsev
Valeriy Alekseevitch Medvedtsev (russian: Валерий Алексеевич Медведцев; born 5 July 1964) is a former Russian biathlete. Career On 16 January 1986, Medvedtsev achieved the feat of winning his World Cup debut. He trained at the Armed Forces sports society in Izhevsk. At the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Medvedtsev, competing for the USSR, won two silver medals in the 10 km sprint and the 20 km individual, and also gold medal in the relay. At the 1992 Olympics in Albertville he won a silver medal in the relay competition for the Unified Team. In the World Championships, Medvedtsev has three relay medals gold from 1986 in Oslo, silver from 1987 in Lake Placid and silver from 1993 in Borovets. Biathlon At The 1988 Winter Olympics
Biathlon at the 1988 Winter Olympics consisted of three biathlon events. They were held at the Canmore Nordic Centre, about 100 kilometres from the host city of Calgary. The events began on 20 February and ended on 26 February 1988. Medal summary Four nations won medals in biathlon, East Germany leading the medal table with two gold medals, and the Soviet Union winning the most medals with 4 (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze). Eirik Kvalfoss
Eirik Kvalfoss (born 25 December 1959) is a Norwegian retired biathlete. Life and career He won three medals during the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo: gold in the 10 km sprint, silver in relay and bronze in the 20 km individual. In total Kvalfoss won 11 individual Olympic and World Championship medals between 1982–1991, as well as several relay medals. He was awarded ''Morgenbladets Gullmedalje'' in 1983. Frank-Peter Roetsch
Frank-Peter Roetsch (born 19 April 1964) is a German former biathlete. He was the first biathlete to win a World Cup race using the skating technique when he won in Oberhof in 1985. Peter Angerer
Peter Angerer (born 14 July 1959) is a former West German biathlete. Career At the 1984 Winter Olympic Games in Sarajevo he won the gold medal in the 20 km individual. In addition he won silver in the 10 km sprint and bronze with the West German relay team. Previously at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid he won a relay bronze medal and at the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary the relay team won silver. In addition to winning five World Championship medals and 24 individual World Cup races, Angerer won the overall World Cup in 1983. Angerer won twice at the Holmenkollen ski festival biathlon competition with wins in the 20 km individual in 1984 and 1985. At the 1986 World Championships, Angerer finished second in the individual and came third with the relay team. Eberhard Rösch
Eberhard Rösch (born 9 April 1954) is a former East German biathlete. Rösch finished third overall in the World Cup in the 1977–78 and 1979–80 seasons. He worked for 17 years as a Stasi informer. Frank Ullrich
Frank Ullrich (, ; born 24 January 1958) is a German politician of the SPD and former biathlete and trainer of the German national team. Since 2021, he has been a member of the Bundestag. Career Biathlon was in Ullrich's family as his father was a biathlon referee. His first appearance was in 1967 at the East Germany, GDR Children Championships. In 1972, he placed second over 5 km at the Spartakiad, in 1975 he became Youth World Champion in relay race, relay. He won a bronze medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics with the 4 × 7.5 km relay team. At the 1980 Winter Olympics he won 3 medals with silvers in the 20 km individual and the 4 × 7.5 km relay and a gold medal in the 10 km sprint, an event he dominated at world level between 1978 and 1981. In 1982 his wife fell ill and died, soon after which he switched to training. Anatoly Alyabyev
Anatoly Nikolayevich Alyabyev (russian: Анато́лий Никола́евич Аля́бьев; 12 December 1951 – 11 January 2022) was a Soviet biathlete. Life and career Alyabyev was born in the village of Danilkovo, Velsky District, Arkhangelsk Oblast. He initially trained at Children and Youth Sport School of Spartak in Vologda, but competed as a senior while training at the Armed Forces sports society in Leningrad. At the 1980 Olympics he was, together with Frank Ullrich the dominant biathlete taking gold medals in the 20 km and on the relay and bronze in the 10 km. Alyabyev best season came in 1980–1981, when he became second overall. Alyabyev was awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1980). He graduated from Lesgaft Military Institute of Physical Culture in 1981 and defended a dissertation for the Candidate of Pedagogical Science degree in 1997.
