Olst
Olst is a town in the Dutch province of Overijssel, about 8 km north of Deventer. It is located in the municipality of Olst-Wijhe. History The village was first mentioned in 947 Holsto. The etymology is unknown. Olst is an ''esdorp'' which developed along the IJssel river. In 1308, the dike along the river was built, and Olst became a stopover for the ships from Zwolle to Deventer. The lower part of the tower of the Dutch Reformed church dates from around 1200. The tower was enlarged in 1336. The church was extensively modified between 1493 and 1494. In the 15th century, the ''havezate'' (manor house) Averbergen was constructed on two yards from the former monastery Essen. The area is similar to the 947 reference, therefore, there might have been earlier predecessors. The manor house was owned by a branch of the van Voorst tot Voorst family. In 1814 it was sold, and later demolished. In 1966, a retirement home was built in its place. Olst was home to 823 people in 1840. I ... Olst-Wijhe () is a municipality in the province of Overijssel, eastern Netherlands. It borders the Overijssel municipalities of Zwolle to the north, Raalte to the north and east and Deventer to the south; and the Gelderland municipalities of Voorst, Epe and Heerde to the west. History and economic activities Both of the municipality's main towns, Olst and Wijhe, are old towns. Olst, which is believed to have been founded in the 7th century, is first mentioned in chronicles in 947 (as "Holsto"), Wijhe in 960 (as "Wie"). Traditionally, agriculture (fruit and cereals), cattle, meat processing and the production of bricks in open-air brickworks along river IJssel were the prime sources of income in the area. Olst is a railway station located in Olst, Olst-Wijhe, the Netherlands. The station was opened on 1 October 1866 and is located on the Deventer - Zwolle section of the Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway. Wijhe
Wijhe () is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Olst-Wijhe and is situated about 12 km south of Zwolle on the banks of the river IJssel. Wijhe was a separate municipality until 2001, when it merged with Olst. History & Sights The first written record of Wijhe dates from the year 960 as "Wie." The village has a church built in the late-Gothic style, parts of which date from the 13th and 14th century. The windmill in the centre is still in working order. It was built in 1703 and is the oldest eight square mill in the province. To the north of Wijhe lies the hamlet of Herxen with a riverside nature reserve. Wijhe has three estates: Hengevoorde containing a manor house, Het Nijenhuis with a castle and De Gelder. The Arnhem–Leeuwarden railway is a railway line in the Netherlands running from Arnhem to Leeuwarden, passing through Deventer, Zwolle and Heerenveen. It is also called the ''Staatslijn A'' ("state line A") in Dutch. The part between Arnhem and Zwolle is sometimes called the ''IJssellijn'' ("IJssel line"). History The line opened between 1865 and 1868. During the Second World War, the tracks between Deventer and Olst were removed by the German occupiers following the national railway strike from 1944 onwards. Deventer
Deventer (; Sallands: ) is a city and municipality in the Salland historical region of the province of Overijssel, Netherlands. In 2020, Deventer had a population of 100,913. The city is largely situated on the east bank of the river IJssel, but it also has a small part of its territory on the west bank. In 2005 the municipality of Bathmen (with a population of about 5,000 people) was merged with Deventer as part of a national effort to reduce bureaucracy in the country. Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. The place is already mentioned in 9th-century sources of the Diocese of Utrecht. IJssel
The IJssel (; nds-nl, Iessel(t) ) is a Dutch distributary of the river Rhine that flows northward and ultimately discharges into the IJsselmeer (before the 1932 completion of the Afsluitdijk known as the Zuiderzee), a North Sea natural harbour. It more immediately flows into the east-south channel around the Flevopolder, Flevoland which is kept at 3 metres below sea level. This body of water is then pumped up into the IJsselmeer. Zwolle () is a city and municipality in the Northeastern Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of Overijssel and the province's second-largest municipality after Enschede with a population of 130,592 as of 1 December 2021.
