Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute
The Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute is an outreach arm of Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin. A 1971 environmental conference at Northland with Sigurd Olson as a speaker was the origin of the institute. Robert Matteson was the founder of the Institute. The Institute opened in Spring, 1972. Loonwatch LoonWatch, a program of the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute, protects common loons and their aquatic habitats through education, monitoring, and research. Though their primary focus is Wisconsin, their education and research activities extend to Upper Great Lakes region, such as Michigan and Minnesota. The Watch also lends support to North American conservation efforts by working with loon conservation organizations across the United States and Canada. The tz database is a collaborative compilation of information about the world's time zones, primarily intended for use with computer programs and operating systems. Paul Eggert is its current editor and maintainer, with the organizational backing of ICANN. The tz database is also known as tzdata, the zoneinfo database or Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, IANA time zone database, and occasionally as the Olson database, referring to the founding contributor, Arthur David Olson. Its uniform naming convention for time zones, such as ''America/New_York'' and ''Europe/Paris'', was designed by Paul Eggert. The database attempts to record historical time zones and all civil changes since 1970, the Unix time epoch. It also includes transitions such as daylight saving time, and also records leap seconds. Oulson
On 13 January 2014, retired American SWAT commander Curtis J. Reeves Jr. shot and killed retired American Gulf War veteran Chad Oulson in a Cobb Theatres movie theater in Wesley Chapel, Florida, United States. The shooting occurred during the movie previews following a brief altercation between the two men. Reeves asked Oulson to turn off his cell phone and Oulson threw popcorn at Reeves. In 2017, Reeves' legal team attempted to use Florida's stand-your-ground law as the basis of his defense, which was initially rejected by the court. In 2022, Reeves was acquitted of second-degree murder and aggravated battery. Death On 13 January 2014, Oulson and his wife Nicole were preparing to watch the movie ''Lone Survivor''; retired law enforcement officer Curtis Reeves and his wife were watching from the row behind the Oulsons.
