Ollie West
Ollie Ernest West (December 28, 1913 – December 10, 1987), nicknamed "Bill", was an American Negro league pitcher in the 1940s. A native of Silsbee, Texas, West made his Negro leagues debut in 1942 for the Chicago American Giants. He played with Chicago through 1945, and also briefly pitched for the Homestead Grays during their 1943 Negro World Series championship season. West died in Denver, Colorado in 1987 at age 73. Silsbee, Texas
Silsbee is a town in Hardin County, Texas, United States. This city is 21 miles north of Beaumont. The population was 6,935 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area. Geography Silsbee is located in eastern Hardin County at (30.348095, –94.180220). U.S. Route 96, a four-lane bypass, forms the southeast border of the city; the highway leads northeast to Jasper and south to Beaumont. Houston is southwest of Silsbee via Beaumont. Chicago American Giants
The Chicago American Giants were a Chicago-based Negro league baseball team. From 1910 until the mid-1930s, the American Giants were the most dominant team in black baseball. Owned and managed from 1911 to 1926 by player-manager Andrew "Rube" Foster, they were charter members of Foster's Negro National League. The American Giants won five pennants in that league, along with another pennant in the 1932 Negro Southern League and a second-half championship in Gus Greenlee's Negro National League in 1934. Founding In 1910, Foster, captain of the Chicago Leland Giants, wrestled legal control of the name "Leland Giants" away from the team's owner, Frank Leland. Homestead Grays
The Homestead Grays (also known as Washington Grays or Washington Homestead Grays) were a professional baseball team that played in the Negro league baseball, Negro leagues in the United States. The team was formed in 1912 in sports, 1912 by Cumberland Posey, and remained in continuous operation for 38 seasons. The team was originally based in Homestead, Pennsylvania, adjacent to Pittsburgh. By the 1920s, with increasing popularity in the Pittsburgh region, the team retained the name "Homestead" but crossed the Monongahela River to play all home games in Pittsburgh, at the Pittsburgh Pirates' home Forbes Field and the Pittsburgh Crawfords' home Greenlee Field. From 1940 until 1942, the Grays played half of their home games in Washington, D.C., while remaining in Pittsburgh for all other home stands. 1943 Negro World Series
In the 1943 Negro World Series, the Washington Homestead Grays, champions of the Negro National League beat the Birmingham Black Barons, champions of the Negro American League, four games to three, with one tie. The games were played in seven different cities. Background The Negro American League held a Championship Series for the first time, matching the champion of the first half of the season with the second half champion. Neither league would have a postseason series to determine the participant in the World Series until 1948, the last held Negro World Series (both the American and National Leagues would hold a series, which coincidentally saw Birmingham and Homestead win the pennant).
