Oliver Twist (1922 Film)
''Oliver Twist'' is a 1922 American silent drama film adaptation of Charles Dickens' 1838 novel '' Oliver Twist'', featuring Lon Chaney as Fagin and Jackie Coogan as Oliver Twist. The film was directed by Frank Lloyd. It was selected as one of the best pictures of 1922 by New York Times, Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times. Walter J. Israel handled the costuming. Studio interiors were filmed at the Robert Brunton Studios in Hollywood. The film's tagline was "8 Great Reels that make you ask for more. Will Hays says Jackie Coogan Films are the sort the World needs." A still exists showing Fagin training his wards to be pickpockets. Coogan was at the height of his career during the filming, having played the title role in Charles Chaplin's ''The Kid'' the previous year. Frank Lloyd
Frank William George Lloyd (2 February 1886 – 10 August 1960) was a British-born American film director, actor, scriptwriter, and producer. He was among the founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and was its president from 1934 to 1935. Biography Lloyd was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His mother Jane was Scottish and his father Edmund was Welsh. Lloyd started his career as a singer and stage actor in London. He is Scotland's first Academy Award winner and is unique in film history, having received three Oscar nominations in 1929 for his work on a silent film (''The Divine Lady''), a part-talkie (''Weary River'') and a full talkie ('' Drag''). Nancy (Oliver Twist)
Nancy is a fictional character in the 1838 novel ''Oliver Twist'' by Charles Dickens and its several adaptations for theatre, television and films. She is a member of Fagin's gang and the lover, and eventual victim, of Bill Sikes. As well as Nancy being a thief, a common suggestion is that she is a prostitute, in the modern sense of the word. At no point is this stated directly in the novel; rather it stems from Dickens describing her as such in his preface to the 1841 edition ("the boys are pickpockets, and the girl is a prostitute"). However, it has been speculated that he is invoking the term's then-synonymous usage referring to a woman living out of wedlock or otherwise on the margins of "respectable" society. In spite of her criminality, Nancy is portrayed as a sympathetic figure, whose concern for Oliver overcomes her loyalty to Sikes and Fagin. Gladys Brockwell (née Lindeman; September 26, 1894 – July 2, 1929) was an American actress whose career began during the silent film era. Early life and career Brockwell was born Gladys Lindeman in Brooklyn, New York, on September 26, 1894. Her father was H.R. Lindeman. Her mother, Lillian Lindeman ( Voltaire), a chorus girl turned actress, put her daughter on stage at an early age. By age 7, Brockwell was performing in dramatic productions with a stock company in Williamsport, West Virginia. Bill Sikes
William "Bill" Sikes is a fictional character and the main antagonist in the 1838 novel '' Oliver Twist'' by Charles Dickens. Sikes is a malicious criminal in Fagin's gang, and a vicious robber and murderer. Throughout much of the novel Sikes is shadowed by his “ bull-terrier” dog Bull's-eye. Role in the novel Dickens describes his first appearance: His girlfriend Nancy reluctantly tolerates, but is intimidated by, his violent behaviour. However, when he thinks Nancy has betrayed him, Sikes viciously murders her. After police identify him as travelling with a dog, Sikes attempts to drown Bull's-eye to rid himself of his companion. The Artful Dodger
Jack Dawkins, better known as the Artful Dodger, is a character in Charles Dickens's 1838 novel '' Oliver Twist''. The Dodger is a pickpocket, so called for his skill and cunning in that occupation. He is the leader of the gang of child criminals on the streets of London, trained by the elderly Fagin. The term has become an idiom describing a person with skilful deception. Edouard Trebaol
Edouard Trebaol (20 May 1905 – 11 October 1935) was an American actor. Biography Trebaol was the son of French immigrants. There were a total of 13 children in the Trebaol family, all of whom are believed to have acted in Hollywood during the silent era. Their mother worked as an extra. Trebaol appeared in at least eight films between 1919 and 1923, first appearing as an orphan in the 1919 adventure film ''Jinx''. His most notable role was as the Artful Dodger in ''Oliver Twist'' (1922) starring Jackie Coogan and Lon Chaney. His last film appearance was in the 1923 Ruth Roland serial, '' Haunted Valley''. Oliver Twist is the title character and protagonist of the 1838 novel ''Oliver Twist'' by Charles Dickens. He was the first child protagonist in an English novel.The full title was "Oliver Twist, or The Parish Boy's Progress." Background Based in the 1820s, the orphan, young Oliver is born in a parish workhouse in an unnamed town. His unmarried mother dies during labour.
