Olena Yuriivna Prytula ( uk, Олена Юріївна Притула; russian: Алёна Юрьевна Притула; born March 10, 1967) is a Ukrainian journalist, the former editor-in-chief, owner (and earlier co-founder) of the ''Ukrayinska Pravda'', an influential online newspaper that focuses on news and political coverage in Ukraine. Early life Born in Zavolzhye, Gorky Oblast, Prytula with her parents moved to the city of Izmail on the Danube in Ukraine. She was educated as an engineer in electroacoustics and ultrasound at Odessa Polytechnic Institute. Influenced by the dramatic social changes in the Soviet Union, Prytula quit her engineering career and became a journalist. She began her journalism career as a correspondent of UNIAR news agency, later working as a stringer for Reuters in Crimea, correspondent for Interfax-Ukraine news agency in Kyiv and Crimea. Zavolzhye (russian: Заво́лжье) is a town in Gorodetsky District of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia, located on the right bank of the Volga River, opposite Gorodets, the administrative centre of the district, and northwest of Nizhny Novgorod, the administrative center of the oblast. Population: Etymology The name of the town literally means ''" he landsbeyond the Volga"'', i.e., on the river's ''left'' bank, since "beyond" here is taken relative to the historically more populated right bank of the river. Thus, Zavolzhye—the region in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast—normally refers to its forested and sparsely populated northeastern half. A tabloid is a newspaper with a compact page size smaller than broadsheet. There is no standard size for this newspaper format. Etymology The word ''tabloid'' comes from the name given by the London-based pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome & Co. to the compressed tablets they marketed as "Tabloid" pills in the late 1880s. The connotation of ''tabloid'' was soon applied to other small compressed items. A 1902 item in London's ''Westminster Gazette'' noted, "The proprietor intends to give in tabloid form all the news printed by other journals." Pavel Grigorievich Sheremet (russian: Павел Григорьевич Шеремет, be, Павел Рыгоравіч Шарамет, 28 November 1971 – 20 July 2016) was a Belarusian-born Russian and Ukrainian journalist who was imprisoned by the government of Belarus in 1997, sparking an international incident between Belarus and Russia. ''The New York Times'' has described him as "known for his crusading reports about political abuses in Belarus" and "a thorn in the side of Lukashenko's autocratic government". He was awarded the Committee to Protect Journalists' International Press Freedom Award in 1999 and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe's Prize for Journalism and Democracy in 2002.
