Oleg Mityaev (general)
Oleg Yuryevich Mityaev (russian: Олег Юрьевич Митяев; born 1974-death 15 March 2022) is a Russian major-general who according to Ukrainian officials was killed during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine on 15 March 2022. His death, however, has not been confirmed. Biography From 2013 to 2015 Mityaev was commander of the 11th Guards Air Assault Brigade. Between December 2016 and November 2018 he ran the Russian 201st Military Base in Tajikistan. He was one of the leaders of the Russian intervention in Syria. From 2020 Mityaev was the commander of Russia's 150th Motorised Rifle Division. According to Ukrainian officials, he was killed in a Ukrainian ambush while taking part in a "combat mission" (according to Russian reports) during the Siege of Mariupol at the Illich Steel and Iron Works during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, reportedly by the Azov Battalion. Mariupol
Mariupol (, ; uk, Маріу́поль ; russian: Мариу́поль) is a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. It is situated on the northern coast (Pryazovia) of the Sea of Azov, at the mouth of the Kalmius River. Prior to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, it was the tenth-largest city in the country and the second-largest city in Donetsk Oblast, with an estimated population of 425,681 people in January 2022. However, Mariupol has been militarily controlled by Russia since May 2022, and the city's residents are now estimated to number around 100,000, according to Ukrainian authorities. A high number of Russian generals have been killed during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. As of 11 July 2022, Ukrainian sources claimed that 14 Russian generals had been killed during the invasion. Although some claims were rebutted, the loss of even two general officers is rare. The scale of these losses is unprecedented since World War II. This has been attributed to Russian senior commanders going to the field to address "difficulties in command and control" and "faltering Russian performance on the front line", insecure communication by Russian forces, and United States military intelligence that allowed the Ukrainians to target Russian officers.
