Old Town Eureka
Old Town Eureka (formally the Eureka Old Town Historic District) in Eureka, California, is a historic district listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. I t is an area containing 154 buildings mostly from the Victorian era. The core of the district runs the length of First, Second, and Third Streets, between "C" and "M" Streets, and includes many types of architecture from the 1850s to the present. Though not officially within the district, the Carson Mansion commands the highest elevation at the eastern edge of the district. History The city began as an 1850 settlement on the edge of Humboldt Bay, where the district is today. Developers and settlers planned for Eureka to aid in the provision of miners working inland to the east. By 1865, the central core of what would become Eureka's "Old Town" was considered "a lively place for a small town, full of business and with plenty of money." Clarke Historical Museum
The Clarke Historical Museum (formerly the Clarke Memorial Museum) in Eureka, California contains the area's premier collection of California North Coast regional and cultural history. The facility houses a Native American wing, Nealis Hall, which features an internationally recognized collection of basketry, regalia, stoneware, implements, and other objects indicative of the culture and creativity of local and regional Native American groups including the Wiyot (on whose ancestral territory the Clarke resides), Yurok, Karuk and Hupa Tribes. Western false front architecture or false front commercial architecture is a type of commercial architecture used in the Old West of the United States. Often used on two-story buildings, the style includes a vertical facade with a square top, often hiding a gable roof. The goal for the architecture is to project an image of stability and success, while in fact a business owner may not have invested much in a building that might be temporary. Albert Pissis
Albert Pissis (1852–1914) was a prolific Mexican-American architect in San Francisco who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France and is credited with introducing the Beaux-Arts architectural style to San Francisco, California, designing a number of important buildings in the city in the years before and after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Life and career Pissis was born on April 26, 1852 in Guaymas in the Mexican state of Sonora. His father was Jose Etienne Pissis (1808-1880), a native of France and a physician, who moved his family to San Francisco, California from Guaymas when Pissis was six. His mother was Juana Bazozabel "Jane" de Bustamante (1824-1893), a native of Guaymas. Pissis was one of the first Americans to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France.
