Old Stone Mosque
The İske Taş () or Iske Tash Mosque, also the Old Stone Mosque (via tt-Cyrl, Иске Таш мәчет, translit=İske Taş mäçet, russian: Старокаменная мечеть, мечеть Иске-Таш, ''Starokamennaya, Iske-Tash'') or the Mosque of the Old Stone (via tt-Cyrl, Иске Таш мәчете, translit=İske Taş mäçete), formerly known as ''The Ninth Cathedral Mosque'', ''The Big Stone Mosque'', is a mosque in Kazan, Russia. History According to the old legend, it was erected on the place of a communal grave of the fighting men who defended Kazan in 1552. The grave was marked by a ''big old stone'' (''zur iske taş''), which has been preserved in front of the east facade of the mosque for many years after its erection. Islam in Tatarstan existed prior to the tenth century, but it began major growth in 922, when Bulgar ruler Almış converted to Islam.Azade-Ayse Rolich, The Volga Tatars, 1986, page 11. Ämirxanov Möxämmätfatix Zarif ulı Fatix Ämirxan (; 1886–1926) was a Tatar classic writer, editor and publicist. Ämirxan was born in 1886 in Kazan, Russian Empire. His father was a mullah of Old Stone Mosque Möxämmätzarif Ämirxanov, an author of Qur'anical tafsir and the founder of the ''Ämirxaniä'' madrassa. Ämirxan graduated '' Möxämmädiä'' madrassa in Kazan, that was the most prominent Tatar educational institution at that time. In 1906-1907 he lived in Moscow and Saint Petersburg, where he published a Tatar journal for children.
