Old Stone House (Pennsboro, West Virginia)
Old Stone House, also known as the Webster-Martin-Ireland House, is a historic inn and boarding house, located at Pennsboro, Ritchie County, West Virginia. The main section was built about 1810, and is a -story stone structure, five bays wide and two bays deep, with a gable roof. Attached to it is a two-story frame addition with a hipped roof. It features a one-story porch across the front facade. It is open by the Ritchie County Historical Society as a historic house and local history museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Pennsboro is a city in Ritchie County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,050 at the 2020 census. The city is located at the junction of U.S. Route 50 and West Virginia Route 74; the North Bend Rail Trail also passes through the city. The town was platted ''circa'' 1820 by Charles Penn, and named for him. Geography Pennsboro is located at (39.283528, -80.967097). Ritchie County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,444. Its county seat is Harrisville. The county was created in 1843 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for Richmond newspaper publisher Thomas Ritchie. History Ritchie was one of fifty Virginia counties that were admitted to the Union as the state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863, at the height of the Civil War. Later that year, the new state's counties were divided into civil townships, with the intention of encouraging local government. This proved impractical in the heavily rural state, and in 1872 the townships were converted into magisterial districts. Ritchie County was divided into four districts: Clay, Grant, Murphy, and Union. In 1911, historian Minnie Kendall Lowther published "The History of Ritchie County."
