"Old Souls" is a 2017 fantasy short story by Fonda Lee about reincarnation. It was first published in the anthology ''Where the Stars Rise: Asian Science Fiction and Fantasy''. Synopsis Claire remembers all of her past lives. What they all have in common is that she always died before turning 21. She has just turned 20, and is desperate to break the cycle. Fantasy
Fantasy is a genre of speculative fiction involving Magic (supernatural), magical elements, typically set in a fictional universe and sometimes inspired by mythology and folklore. Its roots are in oral traditions, which then became fantasy literature and drama. From the twentieth century, it has expanded further into various media, including film, television, graphic novels, manga, animations and video games. Fantasy is distinguished from the genres of science fiction and horror fiction, horror by the respective absence of scientific or macabre themes, although these genres overlap. Fonda Lee
Fonda Lee (born March 10, 1979) is a Canadian-American author of speculative fiction. She is best known for writing ''The Green Bone Saga'', the first of which, ''Jade City'', won the 2018 World Fantasy Award and was named one of the 100 Best Fantasy Books of All Time by ''Time'' magazine. ''The Green Bone Saga'' was also included on NPR's list, "50 Favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books of the Past Decade". Biography Lee was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and currently resides in Portland, Oregon in the United States. She attended Stanford University where she earned her MBA. Before becoming a full-time writer, she worked as a corporate strategist. Lee is a martial artist and has earned black belts in karate and kung fu. Career Lee's debut young adult science fiction novel, ''Zeroboxer'', was published by Flux Books and nominated for the 2016 Andre Norton Award. Reincarnation
Reincarnation, also known as rebirth or transmigration, is the philosophical or religious concept that the non-physical essence of a living being begins a new life in a different physical form or body after biological death. Resurrection is a similar process hypothesized by some religions, in which a soul comes back to life in the same body. In most beliefs involving reincarnation, the soul is seen as immortal and the only thing that becomes perishable is the body. Upon death, the soul becomes transmigrated into a new infant (or animal) to live again. The term transmigration means passing of soul from one body to another after death. World Fantasy Award—Short Fiction
The World Fantasy Awards are given each year by the World Fantasy Convention for the best fantasy fiction published in English during the previous calendar year. The awards have been described by book critics such as ''The Guardian'' as a "prestigious fantasy prize", and one of the three most prestigious speculative fiction awards, along with the Hugo and Nebula Awards (which cover both fantasy and science fiction). The World Fantasy Award—Short Fiction is given each year for fantasy short stories published in English. A work of fiction is defined by the organization as short fiction if it is 10,000 words or less in length; awards are also given out for longer pieces in the Novel and Novella categories. Aurora Award For Best Short Fiction
The Aurora Awards are granted annually by the Canadian SF and Fantasy Association and SFSF Boreal Inc. The Award for Best Short Fiction ( French: ''La meilleure fiction courte''), was first recognized in 1986 as a separate category from Best Long-Form and was first granted as the Award for Best Short-Form ( French: ''Meilleure nouvelle''), one granted to an English-language work and one to a French-language work, but did not become a dedicated category until 1989.
