Old Rose Tree Tavern
The Old Rose Tree Tavern is a historic inn and tavern located in Rose Tree Park just north of the borough of Media, in Upper Providence Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. History John Calvert was granted the land that the tavern stands on in 1682 by William Penn. Daniel Calvert, likely John's grandson, built a frame building along the Providence Great Road (now Pennsylvania Route 252) and was licensed to run a tavern there in 1739. The current building is a large 2 1/2-story, fieldstone building, built in 1809, on the site of the earlier frame structure. A stone addition was built in 1836. Media is a borough in and the county seat of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It is located about west of Philadelphia, the sixth most populous city in the nation with 1.6 million residents as 2020. It is part of the Delaware Valley metropolitan statistical area. Media was incorporated in 1850 at the same time that it was named the county seat. Rose Tree Park
Rose Tree Park is located on Providence Road in Upper Providence Township, Pennsylvania in the suburbs of Philadelphia and used to be used for steeplechase racing. Upper Providence Township is a township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, United States, located around and north of the borough of Media, and about west of center city Philadelphia. The population was 10,142 at the 2010 census. The township lies between Ridley Creek on the west and Crum Creek on the east. Most of Ridley Creek State Park is in the township towards the northern edge. Zoning is 98% residential, 1% commercial and 1% industrial, with minimal space zoned to commercial business. History The area was settled about 1683 and formed into Providence Township. On October 17, 1683, the residents of Providence Township petitioned the Court of Chester County, of which they were then a part, to establish a road from Providence to Chester. William Penn
William Penn ( – ) was an English writer and religious thinker belonging to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, a North American colony of England. Pennsylvania Route 252 (PA 252) is a north–south state highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania that connects PA 320 in Nether Providence Township at its southern terminus to PA 23 in Valley Forge at its northern terminus. The route runs through the western suburbs of Philadelphia in Delaware, Chester, and Montgomery counties, including Nether Providence Township, the borough of Media, Upper Providence Township, Marple Township, Newtown Township, Easttown Township, Tredyffrin Township, and Upper Merion Township.
