Old Mission Beach Athletic Club
Old Mission Beach Athletic Club Rugby Football Club is a rugby union team based in San Diego, California. OMBAC RFC is directly affiliated with the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club. The rugby team plays at The Little Q Rugby Field, adjacent to Qualcomm Stadium (hence the name). History The Old Mission Beach rugby club was established in 1966 under the wing of Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) which was founded in 1954. Many past students of the San Diego State University rugby team joined, and the OMBAC rugby club entered first division competition two years later in 1968. The club has won 6 national Rugby Sevens titles and 8 national Rugby Fifteens titles. Venue In 1991 OMBAC raised funds to build a new clubhouse joining only a handful of teams in the United States to have such a facility. Currently OMBAC plays its home matches at the "Little Q". The USA Rugby Super League, usually known as the Super League, is a defunct national rugby union competition which ran from 1997 to 2012, contested by nine clubs in the United States by its last year. In the 2013 season, it was replaced by the USA Rugby Elite Cup. The Super League competition was sanctioned by USA Rugby, the sport's national governing body, and was the premier level of rugby union in the country until it was reformatted into the Elite Cup. Created by the management of 14 of the best rugby organizations in the United States, the league's goal was to create a high level, national rugby competition in the country. The competition was contested annually starting in 2007, with the largest number of clubs to have competed in the league being 18, in 2007 and 2008. Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club is an English rugby union club, based in Birmingham, that compete in the third tier of English rugby. They were historically the premier rugby club in Birmingham, reaching the final of the John Player Cup three times in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They originally played at the Reddings, but after attempting to keep up with the transition to professional rugby, the club ran into financial difficulties and were forced to sell their 125-year home to property developers. An unsuccessful five-year spell based at the University of Birmingham followed, during which time they were relegated to National Division Two. Dan Payne (born September 12, 1972) is an American former rugby union player, coach, and college athletic director. He is chief executive officer for Rugby Americas, both North and South America. Payne was born in Victor, New York. He attended college at Clarion University where he was an All-America wrestler. Payne did not play rugby in his youth, but discovered rugby in 2001 while living in New York. Payne then moved to San Diego where he played for the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC). Payne's position was number eight. He played for the United States national rugby union team, and played for the U.S. at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Payne coached for several years at San Diego State University. Daniel Joseph Lyle (born September 28, 1970) is an American former rugby union player who played for the United States national rugby union team 45 times from 1994 to 2003, serving as U.S. captain in 24 of those matches. Lyle played number eight. Early life Lyle was born in Louisville, Kentucky. A 1992 graduate of Virginia Military Institute where he played college football, he took up rugby union at age 23 in an attempt to keep fit. National team Lyle debuted for the U.S. national team against Ireland in November 1994 at Lansdowne Road.
