Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area
Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area (known locally as Old A) is a park built on the site of an old landing strip just north of Kailua, Hawaii County, Hawaii. History During World War II, a small landing strip was cleared near the end of Kuakini Highway. In 1947, the State of Hawaii approved a small passenger terminal and a 3,800 foot (1,200 m) runway to be built for tourist flights, which was operational in 1948 and dedicated in 1949. In 1950, of fencing was added to keep out cattle which would wander onto the site. The 1960s brought development of several larger hotels and resorts in the Kailua-Kona area. During the early 1960s, Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines were operating nonstop flights to Kahului on Maui, nonstop and direct flights to Honolulu on Oahu and direct flights to Lihue on Kauai, Aloha with Fairchild F-27 turboprop aircraft and Hawaiian with "Super" Convair 340 prop aircraft. The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 is an American five-abreast narrow-body aircraft, single-aisle aircraft designed by the Douglas Aircraft Company. It was initially produced by the developer company as the Douglas DC-9 until August 1967 and then by McDonnell Douglas. Kailua-Kona is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States. Kohanaiki Beach Park
Kohanaiki Beach Park is a relatively new park, established in 2013, located in Kailua, Hawaii County, Hawaii. Called "Pinetree" by the local people, it is a quiet park visited by the local people mainly, its entrance on Hawaii State Highway 19 being shown only as "Shoreline". There are both sand and rock shores. In the sand shore, there is a small pool where children can swim or wade, while many surfers play in the rock shore. Camping is also permitted. Liliʻuokalani Trust
Lili'uokalani Trust is a private operating foundation located in Hawai'i. It executes the Deed of Trust of Hawaiʻi's last ruling monarch, Lili'uokalani, to provide for orphaned and destitute children, with preference given to native Hawaiian children. History Liliʻuokalani executed a Deed of Trust in 1909, establishing the foundation for the Trust that bears her name. The former monarch was passionate about the children of Hawai'i and "was active in the organization of schools for Hawaiian youth". In her will, she gave her estate over to provide native Hawaiian orphaned children (later changed to destitute children). Hence, Lili'uokalani aimed to address the challenges of child welfare post-European Colonization in Hawai'i. Hawaiian (', ) is a Polynesian language of the Austronesian language family that takes its name from Hawaii, the largest island in the tropical North Pacific archipelago where it developed. Keahole Point
Keāhole Point is the westernmost point of the island of Hawaii. The Kona International Airport was moved here from directly north of the town of Kailua-Kona in 1970, when the previous smaller airstrip was converted into the Old Kona Airport State Recreation Area. The name comes from ''Ke āhole'' since the āhole fish (Kuhlia sandvicensis) was found nearby. Between the airport and the coast lies the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii. Most of the land was formed in 1801 by the ''Huehue'' lava flow from Hualālai. This flow extended the shoreline out an estimated 1 mile, adding some 4 km2 of land to the island.
